Abstract

In the pneumatic starter, the control of the translational movement of the drive pinion 36 is obtained by means of a pneumatic jack 46 which, in a first part of its stroke, receives compressed air only on a first surface 52 and, in the second part of its stroke, also receives it on a second surface 54. Thus, the return spring 44 can be compressed with a high force at the end of the stroke and can therefore have a high rigidity, avoiding the use of a free wheel. The invention is used for the starting of diesel engines.
