Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of new imidazole derivatives of the formula **(See formula)** wherein each of R1 and R2 is independently phenyl, straight-chain lower phenylalkyl, or straight-chain lower phenylalkylene; or one of the foregoing substituted on the phenyl ring by one or more substituents independently selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halo and trifluoromethyl; X is oxygen or sulfur; n is a number from 1 to 8 with the proviso that n is not 1 when it is phenyl or substituted phenyl; or an acid addition salt of the same antimicrobial, whose procedure consists of: a) reacting a compound of formula: **(See formula)** or an acid addition salt thereof, where R1 and n are as defined above and Y is hydroxyl or a leaving group, with a compound of formula R2-W, where W is -CH.-SH or a leaving group, with the following conditions: (i) when Y represents hydroxyl, V represents a leaving group; and (ii) when Y represents a leaving group, W represents CH or -SH, and R2 is the one previously defined, in the presence of a base to obtain the corresponding compound of formula (I); and (b) optionally converting the free base to its acid addition salt or converting the acid addition salt to the corresponding free base.
