Abstract

A method of producing bulky continuous filament yarn, in which the multiple continuous filament primary yarns of polymeric material, comprising at least 20% of the total filaments, are substantially straight and free of ring-shaped crunhoidal waves., and the multiple continuous filament secondary yarns of polymeric material, comprising up to 80% of the total filaments, are formed in randomly spaced longitudinal intervals, with ring-shaped crunoidal waves separated by relatively straight portions and are intermingled between they and the substantially straight strands of the primary strands in such a way that, when a gradually increasing tension load is imposed on the bulky strand, the strands of both the primary and the secondary strand break simultaneously; said method including the steps of pre-treating at least one of the multiple continuous filament primary and secondary yarns by applying water; feeding the yarns into a treatment zone so that at least one of the yarns is fed into the treatment zone by following a path that is aligned in the same direction with a rectilinear path along which the yarn passes through the treatment zone and so that each thread to which water has been applied, enters the treatment zone while it is still wet; dispose within the treatment zone a fluid flow of sufficient turbulence to separate the individual filaments from the strands, to form ring-shaped crunoidal waves and other convolutions at casually spaced intervals along the individual strands of each secondary strand and to make the individual strands of each secondary strand intermingle with each other and with the individual strands of each primary strand; Extract the intermixed filaments from the treatment area and collect them in the form of a single wire, each primary wire being fed into the treatment area at a first rate between 4% and 26% higher than the rate at which the intermixed filaments are removed from the treatment zone and each secondary wire being fed to the treatment zone at a speed that is at least 2.5% higher than the feed speed of each primary wire and up to 30% higher than the speed with which they are extracted intermingled filaments from the treatment area.
