Procedure for the production of basic azo dyes, of formula I, ** (See formula) ** wherein R is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl or alkenyl radical containing up to 18 carbon atoms, R1 and R2 are independent of each other and each signify a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, a halogen atom, an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy or aryloxy radical, an unsubstituted or substituted amino group, or an alkylthio radical, where the alkyl group contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the cycloalkyl radical contains from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, the alkoxy radical contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms and the alkylthio radical contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms, R2 means an unsubstituted or substituted hydrogen atom, an alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical, being that the alkyl radical contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms and the cycloalkyl radical contains from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, R4 means a radical of a coupling component of the benzene, naphthalene or hetero series cyclic or a radical of a coupling component of the aliphatic series, A- means an organic or inorganic anion, characterized in that a compound of formula II is quaternized, ** (See formula) ** wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are defined as above, using a compound of formula III, R - A (III) where R is defined as above and A means a radical capable of being converted to an A- anion.
