A process for the preparation of carbamates that consists in reacting an alcohol of formula ROH, where R represents the organic radical of the alcohol, with an isocyanate of formula R1NCO, where R1 represents a leaving group easily replaced by hydrogen, of the group formed by hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, an acyl group of a carboxylic, hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl and substituted hydrocarbyloxycarbonyl, to produce the corresponding N-substituted carbamate of formula ROCONHR1 and treat this intermediate with a reagent capable of replacing R1 with hydrogen.
