Abstract

Thermoplastic compositions comprise an olefin polymer, 10 to 60 volume per cent of the composition of a calcined aluminosilicate and an organosilane of formula X a (Y b )Si[R n -Z] c , where X is a hydrolysable group capable of reacting with a hydroxyl group, Y is a monovalent hydrocarbon group, R is an alkylene group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, Z is a group capable of reacting with a free radical, n is 0 or 1, a is 1, 2 or 3, b is 0, 1 or 2, c is 1, 2 or 3 and a + b + c is 4. The polymer may be polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with propylene, butenes, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, maleic anhydride or fumaric acid or mechanical or polymerization blend thereof with other compatible polymers. A preferred alumino silicate is kaolin. The compositions are preferably prepared by mixing the olefin polymer with the silane treated filler under conditions generating free radicals, e.g. by high shear mixing or by oxidizing the silane to provide peroxy groups. Conventional antioxidants, e.g. 2,6-di-t.-butyl-p-cresol pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and processing aids, e.g. mineral oil or stearic acid, may also be present. Many suitable polymers and silanes are listed and examples describe compositions comprising polyethylene and calcined kaolin treated with (1-4, 12-14 and 16-18) 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate (15, 19 and 20) vinyltriethoxysilane, (21) 3 - triethoxysilylpropylamine and (22) methyl trimethoxysilyl propionate and comprising 3-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate treated calcined kaolin and blends of polyethylene with (24) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and (25) ethylene/ethyl acrylate copolymer.
