Abstract
Apparatus for treating and advancing filamentary material comprises an inner cylindrical member 73 and an outer cylindrical member 71 defining an annular space therebetween, one of the members at least being rotatable and means 63 closing one end of the annular space and providing an internal filamentary materialcontacting helical cam surface 79. Preferably one or both members are mechanically driven, but if only one member is mechanically driven, the other member may be fixed or rotated by frictional drive from the filamentary material within the annular space. Either or both members may be heated by electric resistances connected if necessary to the supply through slip rings, by induction, or by steam, or other hot gas. As described yarn or tow of nylon or a polyester is passed through a drawing zone if the yarn is not fully drawn, and into a crimping chamber 27 which leads directly into the annular chamber 29 where the helical surface 79 starts the compressed and compacted yarn travelling in a helical path 75. The yarn is discharged over a bell-shaped plunger 31 secured to rod 37 axially displaceable within the driving shaft of cylinder 73. Spring 65 urges the plunger 31 inwardly into the annular chamber. The amount of yarn in the annular chamber is kept substantially constant by the axial position of rod 37 controlling a switch which determines when a high or a low voltage is fed to a magnetic particle brake (47), Fig. I (not shown), in the yarn path between the annular chamber and a constant speed wind-up means. The tension in the yarn, controlled by brake 47, determines the degree of stretch in the yarn being withdrawn from the annular chamber and thus the amount thereof.
