A rechargeable cryosurgical instrument comprising: a body defining a receiving chamber of a refrigerant cartridge, which opens to the atmosphere, at one end and a chilling tip at the other end; a valve member of boiler or boiler in said body, adjacent to said chill tip; a valve actuator device in said body, located between said chamber and said chill tip; a control device attached to said valve actuator device and projecting to the outside of said body, selectively operable to move said valvular device of the boiler or boiler in order to cool or heat said chill tip; means for supplying a refrigerant from a refrigerant cartridge, arranged for insertion in said chamber, up to said chill tip; means for releasing the refrigerant consumed from said refrigerant tip to said chamber; an end cap, removable, seated at the open end of said body; and a positioning member on said end capsule and said body, cooperating to selectively locate said end capsule in one of several positions in said body, whereby, when a refrigerant cartridge is located in said chamber and said end capsule is placed in a first position, the refrigerant cartridge is retained in said body but no refrigerant is left therefrom, and when said end capsule is placed in a second position, the refrigerant cartridge is moved in the indicated body to supply its content.
