Abstract

DESCRIPTION

The invention relates to a piece of furniture with a raised support frame and with a base reaching close to the floor, the front panel of which, which essentially extends across the width of the furniture, is attached to a slide-in unit that is movable relative to the support frame and can be pulled out towards the front.

Such pieces of furniture are generally box furniture, such as cupboards, chests of drawers, etc., which have a base drawer or several drawers underneath the supporting frame designed as a cornice. More recently, so-called sofa beds have also been constructed in a similar way, in that an insert with a slatted frame and poster support overlaps another slatted frame (section) located underneath when inserted, which is connected to the (stationary) supporting frame or an intermediate part that can also be pulled out and is dragged along by the insert. When the insert is pulled out, the two slatted frame sections are - for example, depending on the design - staggered in height next to or behind each other, and a fold-down upholstery part of different thicknesses compensates for the difference in height to form a continuous lying surface.

A problem with all such base inserts is that pulling them out from the inserted rest position is difficult because you cannot grab the panel; regardless of whether the weight of the insert is supported on the fixed part (by means of appropriate support guides) or - as is usual with sofa beds -

is carried directly to the floor using rollers. It is also important to note that such inserts should not be recognizable as such and therefore the attachment of handles or similar is out of the question.

The invention is therefore based on the object of making it easier to pull out such inserts from the fixed part of the piece of furniture, without changing the fact that the insert is not immediately recognizable as such.

This object is achieved according to the invention in that the panel is set back behind the front plane over a larger part of its height and the larger middle part of its width, while its lateral end areas run in the front plane, such that the panel or furniture section that can be pulled out with the panel, which also runs in the front plane, has a horizontal distance from the recessed panel section above it. Due to this distance, the upper panel or furniture section can be gripped from behind and forms a handle for grasping the insert without it being visible as such.

At the same time, the recess allows a person standing in front of the cupboard or sitting on the sofa to slide their feet slightly under the piece of furniture, which is useful and perceived as pleasant. This effect, known from (completely) recessed plinths, is achieved here without losing any front corner space below the supporting frame, which remains usable for accommodating fittings, etc.

If the insert is part of the slatted frame or similar and the upholstery of a sofa bed, the arrangement is preferably such that the panel ends on the top essentially at the height of the pull-out slatted frame section, with an upper, non-recessed edge area of the panel being attached to the frame of the slatted frame section. However, the insert can also be the base drawer of a cabinet piece of furniture.

In any case, it is advantageous if the panel consists of a plate that has a cutout that is open at the bottom, which is spanned along its upper and lower (open) edge by arch-shaped traverses that carry the recessed panel section adapted to the shape of the traverse on the outside.

The drawing illustrates the invention using an embodiment, namely a sofa bed, and «was shows:

Figure 1 shows - in front view - essentially only the insert 1 of the sofa bed and the supporting frame, which is fixed on side plates or legs 2 and is only indicated by cross braces 3 and 4. The supporting frame or an intermediate part dragged by the insert 1 has at least one

Slatted frame section and possibly headrests etc.; this has been omitted because the structure of the sofa bed is of a conventional type. The upholstery of the drawer 1 including the fold-down support for the other sofa bed parts has also been omitted for the same reason and for better clarity.

The insert 1 in turn has a frame formed by side longitudinal beams 5 and cross beams 6 (only the front one is shown), which supports the slats 7 of the slatted frame section that is movable as part of the insert 1. It is clear that the upholstery that is movable with the insert 1 lies and is attached to this movable slatted frame section (slats 7); part of it can be folded back onto a stationary or dragged slatted frame section when the insert 1 is pulled out, with a different thickness of upholstery compensating for the height difference between the slatted frame sections.

The side walls (armrests) arranged in the usual way to the side of the insert 1 are - as mentioned - omitted. These are also padded and enclose the legs 2 and possibly parts of the supporting frame. The latter also supports the back wall of the sofa, which in turn - as is known - can consist of a fixed part and a movable part hinged to the insert 1 or a towed intermediate section.

A panel 8 extends along the front of the insert 1 and is fastened to the front cross member 6 and to the front sides of the longitudinal beams 5. It consists, for example, of a chipboard defining the front side plane 8a on the front and has a cutout 9 in the form of an elongated U that is open at the bottom . This cutout is bridged at the back by two elongated, bow-shaped (wooden) cross members 10 arranged at the top and bottom, which are fastened to the panel 8 at the ends with the aid of vertical reinforcing strips 11 in the area of the vertical side edges of the cutout 9. On the front side, the cross members 10 are covered with a strip of stiff but flexible material (e.g. hardboard) that extends over the full height of the cutout 9 and the entire length of the cross members 10 (and thus also of the cutout 9), which forms the recessed panel section 12. In Fig. 2, which, like Fig. 3, shows part of the pulled-out insert 1, the recess is designated with &zgr;. This creates an upwardly continuous opening 13 between the plate 12 and the section 14 of the panel 8 that remains above the cutout 9 (Fig. 3).

The sections 15 of the panel 8 located to the side of the cutout 9 have rollers 16 on the back on which the insert 1 can move.
