Derselbe besteht aus zwei hohlen, elastischen, mit Wasser oder einer anderen Flüssigkeit gefüllten, dicht verschlossenen Körpern, deren einer dicht unter dem Dampfraum, der andere in der Nähe des vom Feuer direct berührten Kesselbleches an einem gleicharmigen Hebel hängen. Der obere Körper ist durch Doppelwandung, ausgefüllt mit schlechten Wärmeleitern, gegen die Wärme des unter ihm liegenden Wasserraumes geschützt und erhält durch den die Wärme gut leitenden oberen Boden die Temperatur des Dampfraumes, während der untere Körper in derselben Weise nur die Temperatur des Wassers und namentlich auch die der vom Feuer berührten Kesselbleche annimmt. So lange Wasserraum und Dampfraum dieselbe Temperatur haben, bleibt der Apparat in Ruhe, indem beide Körper sich gleichmäfsig ausdehnen. Tritt aber durch Siedeverzug oder durch Druckabnahme eine Differenz in der Temperatur beider Körper ein, so verändert sich die Gröfse derselben ungleichmäfsig, ebenso ihr specifisches Gewicht, infolge dessen sie eine entsprechende Veränderung in der Stellung des Hebels veranlassen. Ueberschreitet die Differenz ein durch Versuche festzustellendes Mafs, so öffnet der Hebel eine Dampfpfeife.
