Masking tape and its use

The invention relates to a masking tape, in particular for covering certain parts during car painting, and to its use. In particular, the masking of medium to large surfaces that must not come into contact with paint during paint repair work in car workshops is intended.

Such masking tapes or hoods are well known and widely used. Standard materials include special paper or newspapers weighing around 50 g, but also folded plastic hoods, around 30 μm thick (approx. 30 g/m ² ), or "endless" films from large rolls (2 m wide), as well as "2 in 1" systems as folded PE films with adhesive tape, and finally PE-coated paper with adhesive tape.

The main requirements for such covering systems are:

■ Paint adhesion = after oven drying, the paint must not fall from the covering material into the fresh paint.

■ Waste = a low waste volume is important because it determines the cost of disposal.

■ Number of people = normally a car is only worked on by one painter, so the cover should be easy to apply by one person.

The object of the invention was to remedy this situation, in particular to create a masking tape in which an inexpensive, absorbent paper can be used, which in particular is not coated, for example PE-coated, and which can therefore also be disposed of more easily and in a more environmentally friendly manner, but which at the same time has good adhesion to varnish and the like (paint adhesion).

This object is achieved by a masking tape as further specified in the claims.

The invention thus combines the very good properties of paper with regard to ink adhesion and the very good properties of films with regard to protection against ink penetration in one handy product.

The product consists of three products in one and can therefore be described as "3 in 1". The building blocks are paper, film and foil.

■ Paper: 30 - 40 g / m ² unbleached kraft paper, 20 - 40 cm wide

■ Film: 10 μm² (= 10 g/ ^m2 ) pre-treated (corona) PE film (surface tension approx. 38 dyn), width of the film depending on the application between 500 mm and 2000 mm. Variable length usually between 10 -30 m.

■ Adhesive tape: approx. 25 mm wide, temperature-resistant (approx. 80 ⁰ C) adhesive tape for car painters (e.g. tesa 4309 etc.).

The paper is used to absorb the larger amount of paint in the edge area of the paintwork and to hold it securely in place even after oven drying, so that no paint can fall into the still soft, fresh paint. The foil is preferably prepared by the corona treatment in such a way that any paint mist is securely fixed. The foil also prevents paint from bleeding through the paper onto the paint.

In detail, the product advantages are as follows:

■ Optimum colour adhesion a) in the critical edge area through the absorbent paper and b) on the remaining area to be blotted off through the specially pre-treated film,

■ Optimum protection against colour penetration through the film,

■ Considerably less waste due to the thin film (e.g. 5x less than 50 g paper),

■ Can be handled by just one person due to the handy format and the prefabricated product,

■ optimal material consumption a) in relation to the covering material due to the direct application to the vehicle and b) in relation to the adhesive tape due to the standardised width, e.g. 25 mm,

■ Time saving due to fewer work steps (3 in 1).

Product advantages compared to the "2 in 1" system:

■ For the edge area, inexpensive, untreated standard kraft paper that is familiar to the painter can be used.

■ Covering the edge area and the large area in one operation.

■ Adhesive tape is only needed once.

The invention will now be described using an example, without wishing to restrict it unnecessarily. It shows:

In detail, Figures 1 - 3 show an adhesive tape 1 made from a paper carrier 2 and a self-adhesive mass 3. A temperature-resistant so-called masking tape which can withstand oven drying at up to 13O ⁰ C (1 hour) is particularly suitable for this purpose, such as the one available commercially as tesa 4309 from Beiersdorf AG, Germany, width 25 mm, thickness 170 μm, adhesion to steel 8.75 N/25 mm. On one edge area 4 of this adhesive tape (1) there is glued an unbleached kraft paper as masking paper 5, 30 cm wide, 35 g/m ² . Next to this masking paper 5 there is glued a masking film 6, 10 μιλ, on the next part of this edge area 4. thick corona-pretreated PE film, 1 m wide and folded.

The folding of the cover film 6 is known per se and is carried out in a manner known and accustomed to by the user, whereby the entire cover tape is wound up into a roll for easier handling.

Claims (9)

1. Masking tape made of a) a temperature-resistant adhesive tape ( 1 ) with a paper carrier ( 2 ) and a self-adhesive mass ( 3 ), b) a masking paper ( 5 ) laminated to the edge area ( 4 ) of the self-adhesive mass ( 3 ) with good ink adhesion and absorbency, and c) a cover film ( 6 ) laminated in the same edge region ( 4 ) of the self-adhesive mass ( 3 ), wherein d) the cover film ( 6 ) completely covers the cover paper ( 5 ) on the side on which the self-adhesive mass ( 3 ) of the adhesive tape ( 1 ) is located and thus backs the cover paper ( 5 ) in the glued-on state. 2. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the adhesive tape ( 1 ) is a temperature-resistant adhesive tape for car painters, a so-called masking tape, with a temperature resistance of in particular a maximum of 130°C (1 hour). 3. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the adhesive tape ( 1 ) is 15-75 mm wide, in particular 19-30 mm wide. 4. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the paper carrier ( 2 ) is creped, stretchable and flexible, and has good ink adhesion, and the entire adhesive tape ( 1 ) has a thickness of 100-250 µm, in particular 130-200 µm. 5. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the masking paper ( 5 ) is an unbleached kraft paper of 30-40 g/m ² and a width of in particular 15-50 cm, very particularly 20-40 cm. 6. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the masking film ( 6 ) is a 7-40, in particular 8-20 µm thick film, in particular made of polyolefin, in particular polyethylene, and in particular corona-pretreated, the width of which is in particular 0.5-2 m. 7. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the masking film ( 6 ) is foldable so that it can be pulled out, in particular it is based on the dimensions of the masking paper ( 5 ) and is folded accordion-like thereto. 8. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that the edge region ( 4 ) of the self-adhesive mass ( 3 ) to which the masking paper ( 5 ) adheres is 1-5, in particular 2-4 mm wide, and the adjoining edge region ( 4 ) of the self-adhesive mass ( 3 ) to which the masking film ( 6 ) adheres is 1-5, in particular 2-4 mm wide. 9. Masking tape according to claim 1, characterized in that it is wound into a roll, the masking film ( 6 ) being folded and the height of the roll corresponding approximately to the width of the masking paper ( 5 ) plus the width of the adhesive tape ( 1 ).
