Der Wagenkasten moderner Schienenfahrzeuge wird insbesondere aus Gewichtsgründen in einer Aluminiumbauweise erstellt, bei der größere Strangpreßprofile miteinander durch Schweißen verbunden sind. Für den Betrieb der Schienenfahrzeuge auf verschiedenen Gleisstrecken ist es in der Regel erforderlich, die Wagenkasten hinsichtlich ihrer Abmessungen - vor allem in ihrer Länge und Breite den Gegebenheiten der jeweiligen Strecke anzupassen. Übliche Wagenkastenbreiten liegen im Maßbereich von 2 mm bis 3200 mm.
