Den beschriebenen Verfahren ist gemeinsam, dass die aktuelle Verkehrssituation technisch aufwendig durch Sensoren, Radar, Kameras oder ähnlichem Equipment erfasst wird, und darauf Schlussfolgerungen gezogen werden um den Fahrer zu warnen oder zu unterstützen. Die für einen Fahrer relativ einfache Aufgabe eine Verkehrssituation zu erfassen und zu bewerten ist jedoch durch Sensoren, Kameras und elektronische Systeme nur durch hohem technischen Aufwand nachzuahmen und aus diesem Grund nur wenig erfolgreich. Navigationssysteme dagegen können mittels GPS die aktuelle Position und Richtung relativ einfach bestimmen, was dem Fahrer während des Fahrens nur mit Mühe mit Hilfe von Landkarten möglich ist. Man unterstützt hier also hier den Fahrer, indem man ihm eine schwierige aber technisch einfach zu lösende Aufgabe der Navigation abnimmt. B. einer Stau-Taste die aktuelle Position und Fahrtrichtung ermittelt. Über eine Internetverbindung wird ein Datensatz mit Position, Richtung und der Warnmeldung „Stau" an die Internet-Datenbasis geschickt. Andere Fahrzeuge mit Fahrerinformationssystem aktualisieren ihre Datenbank(4) sofern in entsprechender Nähe und in entsprechender Richtung unterwegs sind mit dem neuen Datensatz und werden rechtzeitig gewarnt. Nähert sich das Fahrzeug einem Unfallschwerpunkt für Glätte, wird eine Warnmeldung nur dann ausgegeben wenn über entsprechende Sensoren(7) die Plausibilität festgestellt ist.Database (4) contains data records consisting of position information and associated warning messages or information.
