Backrest as spine support.

The invention relates to a backrest as a spinal support, consisting of wood, metal or glass (DE 19801883 Al).

Objects with spine-supporting properties are available in special designs, usually adjustable, as chairs, armchairs or mats.

Their use is very limited because these objects almost always have to be given their own place, not only because of the space they take up, but also because of how they look in a living area. When using them, you try to concentrate on the adjustment functions and constantly fiddle with them, which distracts you when there are several people around.

DE 19801883 Al describes a chair with a freely swinging backrest, which is formed together with the rear leg structure. The spine is only movable in the middle and upper area and only supported in the vertical plane. Viewed horizontally, the backrest is straight. This chair is difficult to integrate into a normal living room furniture landscape, also because of its visual impression. It is a special chair or armchair that requires its own space.

The invention is based on the problem of creating a backrest which avoids the disadvantages mentioned above, but should include all properties that are suitable for promoting the healing process of a damaged spine from the lowest lumbar vertebra to the upper thoracic spine through full support and for providing relaxation and relief to a still intact spine and at the same time supporting the back muscles in their physiological activity through the predetermined sitting position.

This problem is solved with the features listed in claim 1 (if applicable, verbatim citation of the features).

The invention ensures that almost all newly manufactured commercially available chairs can be equipped with such a backrest.

The aim of this is to ensure that these back-friendly benefits can be enjoyed by everyone every hour and whenever they sit in a normal household, during training or at work.

Because the backrest is firmly installed, you are not distracted when sitting down, apart from the immediate relief in your back, and can immediately concentrate on what is going on.

The use of the backrest can also be extended to benches such as kitchen or living room corner benches or restaurant, school and garden benches. Here too, it was taken into account that the backrest can be integrated into normal, usual, new benches without negatively affecting their purpose or appearance.

As many backrests are built into the total length of the bench backrest as there are seats provided.

The chair shown in the drawing (Fig. 1) has a built-in backrest with 8 slats (1) between the two rear legs. The slats are curved in a way that resembles the spine of a person sitting upright.

In order to give the slats, which are spaced at the same distance from each other, a pleasing appearance, they were also given a similar curved shape on the rear edge.

The distance from slat (1) to slat (1), as well as the thickness of the slats, are set in such a way that when leaning your back against the backrest you have the pleasant feeling of a slightly rounded surface (Fig. 4).

The fixed backrest is formed by firmly connecting the vertical slats (1) to the lower (3) and upper (2) horizontally extending frames, as described in claim 2.

The frames have an inner arch (Fig. 3) that is adapted to the back of a person. To keep the frame slim, the outer edge of the frame was also designed in an arched shape.

The two frames (3,2) of the solid backrest element thus formed are firmly doweled to the two rear legs of the chair and thus give the chair the necessary static strength.

In order to be able to continue the arched course of both the vertical slats (1) and the horizontal inner arch of the frames (3,2) up to the outer edges of the chair sides, the rear legs (6) were equipped with the same arched courses (Fig. 4,3).

Since the backrest is a separate unit, it can be installed in almost all commercially available chairs that are to be redesigned.

As a complete element, this backrest can also be integrated into a wide variety of bench types.

Figure 2 shows a corner bench with a backrest made up of 10 slats (1). Instead of the usual fillings in a backrest, only the backrest element is permanently installed between the horizontal (2,3) and vertical (7) frame parts of a backrest. The number of backrests is determined solely by the number of seats. The bench is not changed in any other design details. Even with corner benches, the entire corner design is retained as intended by the furniture designer (Fig. 2,5).

The benches can be made of various materials, as mentioned in claim 1. The surface treatment of the selected material, opaque, stained or glazed, is also left to the designer.

The production of this invention can be done both industrially and by hand.

Claims (7)

1. Backrest as spinal support, consisting of wood, plastic, metal or glass, characterized in that it is suitable for installation in normal chairs or benches. 2. Backrest according to claim 1, characterized in that it is a fixed frame construction consisting of vertically arranged slats ( 1 ) which are connected to an upper ( 2 ) and a lower ( 3 ) horizontally extending frame. 3. Backrest according to claim 2, characterized in that preferably 8 slats are used for a chair. 4. Backrest according to claim 2, characterized in that for benches preferably 10 slats are used. 5. Backrest according to one of claims 2 to 4, characterized in that the vertical slats ( 1 ) have an arched course of a spine directed upwards, which begins at the seat surface level ( 4 ) and extends to shoulder height ( 5 ). 6. Backrest according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that the backrest thus formed from 8 or 10 pieces of slats ( 1 ) also has an inner curvature adapted to the shape of the back of a person in horizontal section ( Fig. 3). 7. Backrest according to one of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that when the backrest is installed in chairs, the two rear chair legs ( 6 ) in the backrest area have the same curved profiles as the slats ( 1 ) ( Fig. 1, 3, 4).
