Description

Multi-pane insulating glass, also known as thermopanes, is used to improve the heat and sound insulation of glass surfaces. It consists of two or more panes arranged at a distance from one another, which are hermetically connected at their edges with a frame, usually a metal frame. The interior space between the panes is filled with dry air or another dry gas.
The multi-pane insulating glass is often found in doors and windows that must be available as emergency exits in the event of danger. It is common practice to mark all emergency exits with a luminescent material that glows in the dark and thus makes the emergency exits visible even if all light sources fail completely. The luminescent material is usually a luminescent paint containing luminescent pigments applied to the surface to be marked, or a suitably equipped luminescent film.
In the case of windows and glazed doors, such markings can only be applied in the area surrounding the glass, but not on the glass itself, which often means that the glass area cannot always be identified reliably and clearly enough. It is particularly important to make the glass area particularly easy to identify, for example because glazing may have to be broken in an emergency to clear an exit.
This is where the invention comes in. Its aim is to equip a multi-pane insulating glass unit with a luminescent material so that the glazed area is particularly easy to see in the dark. The invention achieves this aim by making the frame on the edges of the panes luminescent on the side facing the interior between the panes.
It has been shown that a multi-pane insulating glass unit can be clearly seen even in complete darkness thanks to the equipment according to the invention, and in fact its outline can be seen precisely. It is particularly noteworthy that the luminous intensity, evidently due to reflections on the glass panes, appears to be significantly greater than would normally be expected. Overall, the equipment according to the invention thus fulfills an optimal function as a safety feature.
The nature of the equipment according to the invention is arbitrary, as long as it is ensured that the inside of the frame has a luminescent surface. The inside of the frame can be covered with a luminescent film or coated with a luminescent paint. However, the inside of the frame is preferably coated with a luminescent enamel because it is better able to withstand the high temperatures that occur in strong sunlight and especially in the event of a fire, whereas a film or paint can easily peel off and flake off at high temperatures.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. The drawing schematically shows the bottom right corner of a double-pane insulating glass unit.
Two panes of glass 1 and 2 are welded hermetically to a frame 3 at their edges. They are kept at a distance from each other by the frame. The space between the panes is filled with air or another gas, which must be dry in order to avoid condensation on the panes.
The surface 4 of the frame facing the interior between the panes is luminescent, in the present example by
This means that the insulating glass appears to be illuminated from its edges in the dark and can therefore be identified with absolute certainty in the dark. Another advantage is that no luminous markings need to be applied in the area surrounding the pane, for example on the window or door frame that supports it, at least not for the purpose of making the glass area recognizable.
The invention is not limited to double-pane insulating glass, but can also be used for insulating glass with three or more panes. The luminescent finish of the inner surface 4 of the frame 3 does not have to consist of a luminescent enamel, but any type of luminescent finish is possible, for example with luminescent film or luminescent paint.
