Abstract

The transducer centrepiece is fitted with two vibrator aggregates which are fixed by means of steel bolts to outward angled faces to form a trapezoid combination. The centrepiece incorporates a fixing socket for the attachment of a vibration transmitter at right angles to the plane of the vibrators. A variety of tools or instruments such as drills, cutters, grinders, can be attached to the transmitter. The vibrators and transmitter are arranged to vibrate at half of the ultrasound wavelength in opposing phases by polarity reversal of the supply current. The configuration induces vibrations both axially and transversely for increased efficiency. This mode of operation also facilitates the insertion of long flexible probes or catheters in medical applications.
