1878. SELWIG & LANGE in BRAUNSCHWEIG. Dampf-Wasser-Ofen. Dadurch erreicht man folgendes:1878. SELWIG & LANGE in BRAUNSCHWEIG. Steam-water oven. Patented in the German Empire from ι. January 1878. The steam-water oven shown in the drawing consists of an outer and an inner sheet metal cylinder, which are connected above and below by appropriately shaped bases (here made of cast iron), so that an annular cavity of rectangular cross-section is formed. This cavity is divided into two concentric cavities, which are connected to one another at the top, by a cylindrical sheet metal riveted tightly to the bottom of the furnace, which almost reaches the top of the furnace. The outer cavity A contains water: the inner B is traversed by steam in the direction from top to bottom, which enters through valve a. The water condensed from it flows off through valve b. To fill the space A with water (or to empty it) a screw c can be attached above it and a screw d at the bottom. The former is not necessary, since so much water gradually condenses from the steam in room A that the latter is completely filled with it. In order to prevent the furnace from being compressed by the pressure of the air when the sheet metal is not thick enough, when the steam has been switched off and what is still in the furnace has condensed into water, it is advisable to install an inwardly opening air valve. In the construction of the oven explained above, it has only a water heating surface on the outside and only a steam heating surface on the inside. This achieves the following: 1. The air in the room to be heated is heated by the air inside Steam heating surface very quickly, especially for the reason that there is one in the inner tube strong air flow upwards is created, while the steam, as indicated by arrows, after flows below. 2. After the steam has flowed through the furnace for some time, the water in room A is also warmed by it to such an extent that it gives off heat to the room to be heated. The movement indicated by arrows arises in the water, which has a beneficial effect on the exchange of heat between steam and air. Because of the lower heat radiation from the outer water heating surface, the stove is particularly suitable for heating living rooms and offices, and because the water it contains also forms a heat reservoir, i.e. the stove still gives off heat after the steam has been switched off.
