Zur Prüfung der Schienen auf Härte und Materialgüte werden zweckmäßig hydraulische Vorrichtungen benutzt, welche eine harte Stahlkugel in den Kopf der Schiene drücken, um aus dem mehr oder weniger tiefen Eindringen dieser Kugel die Güte der Schienen ermessen zu lassen. Die hohe Druckkraft des Kolbens findet hierdurch ein angemessenes Widerlager.
