Die üblichen Türverschlüsse weisen unter Federwirkung stehende Sperriegel auf, die hinter Rasten des Türrahmens greifen und so die Tür geschlossen halten. Der Sperriegel ist in der Regel durch einen Handgriff, z. B. eine Klinke, einen Drehgriff oder einen Handhebel, entriegelbar. Vielerlei Türen, beispielsweise die Türen von Luftschutzräumen und insbesondere die Türen von Kühlschränken, werden mit einer ringsherum reichenden elastischen Dichtung in Gestalt eines geschlossenen Gummiprofilstreifens ausgerüstet. Hierbei müssen die Türen beim Schließen mit gewisser Kraft zugeschlagen oder zugedrückt werden, um den elastischen Dichtungsstreifen so weit zusammenzupressen, bis sich der Sperriegel hinter die bei Kühlschränken beispielsweise als Sperrstift ausgebildete Rast des Türrahmens legen und so die Tür gegen den Druck der elastischen Abdichtung geschlossen halten kann. Zum öffnen der Tür reicht im allgemeinen ein kurzzeitiger, meist stoßartiger Druck auf den Handhebel aus.
