Description
Shock absorber for suspension springs in motor vehicles. The present invention relates to a shock absorber for the suspension springs of motor vehicles, consisting of a hydraulic brake with a compensation chamber intended to receive, during the movement of the piston, a part of the liquid, with a view to compressing the liquid. air contained therein and thus make it function as an elastic mattress.
The damping fluid can be glycerin, mineral or vegetable oil, or any other suitable liquid. However, castor oil is preferably used, which has, like glycerin, no dissolving action on rubber packings, is quite viscous and at the same time possesses very superior lubricating qualities which make it particularly suitable for this application.
The shock absorber is preferably attached to the vehicle by a universal joint and with the interposition of rubber buffers. This system allows the easy application of the device to existing vehicles without requiring any adaptation work and, after assembly, it allows all the movements of the components between which the shock absorber acts very silently.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of this shock absorber applied to a vehicle.
1 indicates a side member of the vehicle and 2 is a bracket fixed to the spring 3. To the side member 1 is fixed an oil pin 4 for fixing the rod 5, ending in a pin 6, movable in a cylinder 7, of which the yoke 8 is attached to an oil pin 9, similar to the pin 4, and fixed by the bracket 2 to the spring 3.
The part of the cylinder 7 opposite the cup 8 is closed by a stuffing-box plug 10, so that the cylinder is double-acting.
The piston 6 is provided with holes 11 and its rod has a cavity 12 forming a compensation chamber, separated from the lower chamber 71 of the cylinder 7 by a rubber piston 12 '.
The rod 5 is protected against dust and other deteriorating agents by a protective sleeve 13, for example of rubber. Another envelope 14, which may be metallic, protects the entire device against stones, mud, etc.
The rod 5 and the cylinder head 8 are attached to their oil pins 4 and 9 with the interposition of rubber washers 15, so that the assembly is universal and elastic.
The operation of the shock absorber described is as follows: When the vehicle encounters an irregularity in the ground, the spring 3 flattens, the distance between the pins 4 and 9 decreases and the piston 6 approaches the cylinder head 8.
The liquid contained in the lower chamber 71 then tends to pass through the holes 11 in the upper capacity 72, but, as the latter has a smaller volume and due to the resistance of the holes 11, part of the liquid rises. along the rod 5, lifts the piston 121 and compresses the air contained in the compensation chamber 12.
As the spring 3 relaxes, the piston forces the liquid contained in the cavity 72 to enter the cavity 71 through the holes 11, producing a considerable resistance, which effectively slows down the oscillation of the spring.
The liquid which was mounted in the compensation chamber 12 comes out under the action of the compressed air contained therein.
