CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION

This patent application claims priority of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 929,010, filed June 8, 2007, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

BACKGROUND

Flavors are often added to tobacco products, including smoking articles or non-smoking oral tobacco products, to achieve desirable organoleptic sensations. Flavors are typically added to the tobacco material or filter component.

SUMMARY The present invention relates to smoking articles which include a controlled taste release product that provides a prolonged and varied organoleptic sensation. A controlled release flavor product is provided that includes at least one release flavor in a first time and a release flavor in a second time. Additional release flavors may also be included over time.

Preferably, the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring contain different flavors, but they may contain the same flavors. In one embodiment, the flavoring for release in a first time and the flavoring for release in a second time contain the same flavoring. Also, preferably, the first-time release flavor and the second-time release flavor are released at different times during smoking to provide continuous enjoyment and a variety of flavors. Also preferably, the time release of the flavoring for release in a second time overrides the release of the released flavoring in the first time.

In a preferred embodiment, the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring are incorporated into controlled release microcapsules. The microcapsules may be inlaid in a shape to create a controlled release flavor product. Each microcapsule may contain the first time release flavoring, the second time release flavoring or both.

In another embodiment, the microcapsules form the controlled flavor release product that can be used in a smoking article. Preferably, the controlled flavor release product includes at least one release flavor in a first time and a release flavor in a second time.

Suitable microcapsules for the controlled release of flavors are those developed by Salvona LLC of Dayton, New Jersey. (e.g. MultiSal ™ and NanoSal ™).

MultiSal ™ is a free-flowing powder matrix with high concentrations of nanosphere encapsulated functional ingredients. NanoSal ™ is a liquid formula encapsulated in solid, hydrophobic nanospheres. Each micro capsule can incorporate different oil-based flavors for controlled release over time. Microcapsules provide improved bioadhesive properties such that flavorants adhere to the mucosa in the oral cavity to prolong taste pleasure. Microcapsules can also be designed to target specific areas of the mouth.

In a preferred embodiment, the controlled flavor release product has controlled diffusion mechanisms. The first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring may be released by the same or different mechanisms at the same or different times. Additional release flavors over time can be used and can be triggered by different methods at different times.

In one embodiment, the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring are released by exposure to moisture from the lips or mouth. In another embodiment, heat from combustion of the smoking article or from the user's mouth may cause the release of the flavoring for release in the first half and the flavoring for release in the second half. In yet another embodiment, the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring are released by a pH variation. PH variation may occur when the controlled flavor release product is placed in an environment such as a human's mouth. Alternatively, a substance may be added to a microcapsule that varies the pH and causes the release of another microcapsule.

Preferably, the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring are embedded in a shape to create a controlled flavor release product. In a preferred embodiment, the controlled taste release product is in the form of a lip balm formulation. The lip balm formulation can be made of a wax with the first-time release flavor and the second-release flavoring embedded in it. In another embodiment, the controlled flavor release product is in the form of a film having a first-time release flavor and a second-time release flavor embedded in it. The films may be formed by conventional means known in the art and may be dissolvable and / or disintegrable. Preferably, the film is adhered to the downstream end of the smoking article.

In one embodiment, the first-time release flavoring may include a different flavoring than the second-time release flavoring so that the user is provided with at least two flavors during the smoking experience. In addition, as the first-time release flavoring and the second-time release flavoring are released at separate times, organoleptic sensations are prolonged, thereby providing the user with more flavor over a longer period of time.

Flavorings suitable for use in the controlled flavor release product include, without limitation, mint such as peppermint and mint, vanillin, chocolate, licorice, citrus and other fruit flavors, spice flavors such as cinnamon, salicylate methyl, linalool, bergamot oil, geranium oil, lemon oil, ginger oil, tobacco flavors and other agents commonly used to impart flavor and aroma to tobacco products.

Other suitable flavors and flavors may include flavoring compounds selected from the group consisting of an acid, an alcohol, an ester, an aldehyde, a ketone, a pyrazine, combinations or mixtures thereof and the like. Suitable flavor compounds may be selected from, for example, the group consisting of phenylacetic acid, soleone, megastigmatrienone, 2-heptanone, benzyl alcohol, cis-3-hexenyl acetate, valeric acid, valeric aldehyde, ester, terpene , sesquiterpene, no-otkatona, maltol, combinations thereof and the like. The first and second flavorings may contain a cooling agent.

Additives such as chemoesthesia agents may also be included in the controlled taste release product. Suitable chemoesthesia agents include, without limitation, capsaicin, tannins, mustard oil, wintergreen oil, cinnamon oil, allicin, quinine, citric acid and salt.

In one embodiment, complementary flavors may be chosen for the first-time release flavor and for the second-time release flavor to provide a combined flavor. For example, a cherry and vanilla flavor may be provided by choosing a cherry flavoring for the first time release flavor and a vanilla flavoring for the second time release. In one embodiment, the release of the first-time flavoring release and the second-time release flavoring may overlap so that the complementary flavorings can be enjoyed together. The term "smoking article" includes cigarettes, pipes, cigars and cigarillos.

Non-traditional cigarettes such as cigarettes using electrical smoking systems are also included in the definition of smoking articles or cigarettes in general.

A traditional cigarette typically contains two sections, a tobacco-containing portion sometimes called the tobacco rod and a filter portion that may be called a filtration zone. The role of the tip typically surrounds the filter, which forms the tip of the cigarette to the mouth. The role of the nozzle overlaps the tobacco rod to hold the filter and tobacco rod together. The tobacco rod includes a paper wrapper in which tobacco is wrapped and an adhesive that holds the seams of the paper wrapper together. The tobacco rod has a first end that is integrally adhered to the filter and a second end that is lit or heated to smoke the tobacco. When the tobacco rod is lit or heated to smoke, the smoke passes from the lit end downstream of the tobacco rod filter end and further downstream through the filter.

The "upstream" and "downstream" relative positions between filter segments and other features are described with respect to the direction of mainstream smoke as it is pulled from a tobacco rod and through a multicomponent filter during a puff.

In a preferred embodiment, the smoking article is a cigarette. The cigarette may contain tobacco material, a filter and a controlled flavor release product. In one embodiment, the cigarette may also contain at least one absorbent agent. The term "absorbent agent" as used herein refers to an adsorbent agent, an absorbent agent or a substance that can function as an adsorbent agent and also as an absorbent agent. Preferred absorbent agents include various forms of activated carbon, molecular sieves, such as zeolites and mixtures thereof.

Examples of suitable types of tobacco materials that may be used include, but are not limited to, flue-cured tobacco, Burley tobacco, Maryland tobacco, Oriental tobacco, rare tobacco, specialty tobacco, mixtures thereof and similar. Tobacco material may be provided in any suitable form, including, but not limited to, tobacco leaf, processed tobacco materials such as swollen or swollen tobacco, processed tobacco stems such as swollen cut or swollen cut, reconstituted tobacco materials, mixtures thereof and the like. Tobacco substitutes may also be used.

In one embodiment, the tobacco material may include at least one humectant such as glycerin, at least one non-tobacco sweetener or flavoring or combinations thereof dispersed throughout the tobacco material.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

As illustrated in Figure 1, a smoking article 10 has an upstream end 12 and a downstream end 14. Smoking article 10 includes a filtration zone 40 which is at the downstream end 14. Filtration zone 40 includes a circled filter 42 or a paper portion of the nozzle 18. The filtration zone 40 is attached to a tobacco rod 20. In one embodiment, the filter 42 is made of cellulose acetate fibers. The smoking article 10 preferably includes a controlled flavor release product 16. In one embodiment, the controlled flavor release product 16 includes a first-time release flavoring 24 and a second-time release flavoring 26.

Preferably, the flavor-releasing product 16 coats the role of the nozzle 18 surrounding the filter 42 at the downstream end 14 of the smoking article 10. Also preferably, the flavor-releasing product 16 is in the form of a Lip balm type formulation 15. Lip balm type formulation 15 may be made of a wax with the first-time release flavor 24 and the second-time release flavor 26 embedded therein.

In another embodiment, as seen in Figure 2, the controlled taste release product 16 is in the form of a lip balm-type formulation 15 which coats the end 22 of the smoking article filter 10. The formulation of the lip balm type 15 is transferred to a user's mouth by contact with the downstream part 14.

In one embodiment, as illustrated in Figure 3, the smoking article 10 has an upstream end 12, a downstream end 14, a tobacco rod 20, a filtration zone 40 including a tip-coated filter 42 18 and a controlled flavor release product 16.

Preferably, the flavor controlled release product 16 is in the form of a film 30. The film 30 is formed by conventional means known in the art. In a preferred embodiment, the film 30 may be dissolved or disintegrated. Preferably, a first time release flavoring 24 and a second time release flavoring 26 are embedded in the film 30. The film 30 is wrapped around and adhered to the tip paper 18.

In another embodiment, as shown in Figure 4, the smoking article 10 has an upstream end 12, a downstream end 14, a tobacco rod 20, a filtration zone 40 including a tip-coated filter 42 18 and a controlled taste release product 16. Preferably, the controlled taste release product 16 is in the form of a film 30 which is affixed to the end 22 of filter 42.

In a preferred embodiment, the film 30 is bonded to the tip paper 18 or the end 22 of the film 42 by any known adhesive. For example, the film 30 may be glued onto the tip paper 18.

In one embodiment, the smoking article 10 does not include the filtration zone. As seen in Figure 5, the smoking article 10 may be a cigar without the filtration zone or a unfiltered cigarette. The flavor release product 16 may cover the downstream end 14 of the wrapper 100 or the end 200 of the smoking article 10. In one embodiment, the flavor release product 16 may be a film that is covering around the end 14 downstream of the smoking article 10.

Also provided is a method for manufacturing a smoking article which includes a controlled flavor release product.

In a preferred embodiment, the method of manufacture includes contacting a wrapper with a controlled taste release product, encircling it with the wrapper and sealing the wrapper to form a smoking article. The method may also include sealing a filter to the rod and then cutting the rod to a specified length.

In another embodiment, the method for manufacturing a smoking article having a taste release product includes coating a tip paper with the taste release product and wrapping a filter with the tip paper. Coating can be done by dipping or brushing the product for controlled flavor release. The method may also include the step of adapting the filter to a tobacco rod to form a cigarette.

In yet another embodiment, the method includes applying the coating to the end of a filter with a lip balm-like formulation that has a soaked first-time release flavor and a second-time release flavoring. The filter may be obtained by conventional methods known in the art and attached to a tobacco rod to form a cigarette. The end of the filter is then coated by dipping, spraying or by applying the lip balm type formulation to the cigarette end.

In a preferred embodiment, the method includes adhering a film having a first-time release flavoring and a second-time release flavoring soaked to the end of a filter of a smoking article. The film is cut to an appropriate size and glued to the end of the filter.

In another embodiment, the method includes adhering a film having a release flavor in the first half and a release flavor in the second half soaked in the tip role of a smoking article. The film is formed or cut to approximately the size of the tip paper and adhered to it.

In another embodiment, the method includes adhering a film that has a first-time release flavor and a second-time release flavor soaked in the wrapper of a smoking article.

Variations and modifications of the above will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Such variations and modifications need to be considered within the limits and scope of the appended claims.

Claims (11)

A flavor release controlled smoking article (10) comprising: a tobacco rod (20); a downstream end (14); and a flavor controlled release product (16) which contacts the downstream end (14) of the smoking article (16), the flavor controlled release product (16) including: a first time release flavor (24). ) delivered at first and triggered by a first mechanism; and characterized by the fact that it further includes: a second-time release flavoring (26) delivered in a second moment and triggered by a second mechanism, wherein the second moment is different from the first moment.
