Um eixo de cames de aço fundido com um espaço oco interno com forma interna cilíndrica especialmente perfilada pode ser fabricado racionalmente por um processo de fundição "Lost Foam" em si conhecido. Um eixo de cames de aço assim fabricado pode suportar nas suas regiões de superfícies de trabalho, sem danos, pressões superficiais hertzianas extremamente elevadas por um longa vida útil.
