Abstract

"GENES CODIFICADORES PARA POLIPETìDIOS DE <255>-GALACTOSIDASE DE TOMATES". The present invention provides a new family of <255> -galactosidase genes and DNA sequences derived from the cloning of products encoding cDNAs from these genes, as exemplified by a <255> -galactosidase II protein, which is encoded by a clone of cDNA, pZBG-1-4. A method for modifying cell wall metabolism that involves modifying the activity of at least one <255> -galactosidase and therefore modifying the quality of the fruit is also provided. Also provided by the present invention is a DNA construct including some or all of the <255> -galactosidase DNA sequence, under control of a transcriptional initiation region operative in plants, so that the construct can generate DNA and, optionally, polypeptide. of <255> -galactosidase in plant cells. The present invention also relates to recombinant vectors, which include isolated nucleic acid molecules of the present invention, and to host cells containing the recombinant vectors, as well as methods of producing such vectors and host cells and for use in them for the production of polypeptides. or <255> -galactosidase peptides by recombinant techniques. The present invention also provides plant cells containing DNA constructs of the present invention; plants derived therefrom having modified β-galactosidase gene expression and seeds produced from such plants.
