Compounds that bind VLA-4 are disclosed. Some of these compounds also inhibit leukocyte adhesion and, specifically, VLA-4 mediated leukocyte adhesion. Such compounds are useful in the treatment of inflammatory diseases in mammals, for example humans, such as asthma, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, AIDS dementia, diabetes, bowel irritation disease, rheumatoid arthritis, tissue transplantation, tumor metastasis and ischemia of the myocardium. The compounds can also be administered to treat inflammatory brain diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.
