Process for the production of mineral, in particular chrome-tanned soles and similar leather.
So far, exclusively vegetable-tanned leather has been used as sole and similar leather for hard-wearing shoes. Chrome-tanned or mineral-tanned leather is unsuitable as sole leather for hard-wearing shoes and all attempts that have been made to make an equivalent substitute for vegetable-tanned sole leather from mineral or chrome-tanned leather have not led to any result. The subject matter of the invention is a method by which chrome-tanned or mineral-tanned leather is made suitable as sole and other leather and is made into an equivalent substitute for the vegetable-tanned leather. The invention consists in that chrome-tanned or mineral-tanned leather is subjected to a liming process.
The invention is based on the finding that mineral or chrome-tanned leather, when treated with milk of lime or the like, has the properties of a good vegetable-tanned sole leather to a greater extent and, in particular, becomes more resistant and firm to moisture and cold and loses its slipperiness, as well as to Vegetable tanned leather of the same thickness has a longer useful life.
The method according to the invention can be carried out in such a way that the conventionally chrome-tanned leather is ashed. A period of approximately two to three days is sufficient for the liming.
If necessary, the leather can be subjected to an impregnation process to increase the water tightness before or more appropriately after the liming.
A chrome-tanned leather of this type is also used for seals and the like. Technical
Excellent use.
