Abstract

Si bien el dióxido de cloro se usa, generalmente, para controlar la contaminación bacteriana, se desarrolló un método que permite el uso de dióxido de cloro estabilizado (SCD) para controlar la contaminación durante la fermentación que usa las bacterias Zymomonas como catalizador biológico, aun cuando las Zymomonas son sensibles al dióxido de cloro. Se identificaron parámetros para inocular una composición para fermentación con células de Zymomonas después de transcurrir un período de tiempo después de la adición de SCD. Reivindicación 1: Un método de fermentación para controlar la contaminación bacteriana en un proceso de fermentación caracterizado porque comprende Zymomonas como catalizador biológico; el método comprende: a) proporcionar un medio de crecimiento que tiene el potencial de ser contaminado por una especie bacteriana; b) añadir una cantidad eficaz de dióxido de cloro estabilizado al medio de crecimiento de (a) para formar una mezcla de dióxido de cloro estabilizado, en donde la temperatura de la mezcla de dióxido de cloro estabilizado es mayor que aproximadamente 33ºC; c) inocular la mezcla de (b) con células de Zymomonas a una temperatura adecuada para que las células de Zymomonas produzcan un caldo inoculado; y d) fermentar el caldo inoculado en condiciones adecuadas para el crecimiento de las células de Zymomonas; en donde la contaminación bacteriana se controla durante la fermentación.
