Abstract
Said recombinant DNA molecule contains: a) a functional promoter in plant cells and b) a DNA sequence encoding a polypeptide that exhibits enzymatic activity of a fructose -1,6-diphosphate aldolase and operably linked with the promoter oriented in the sense of the frame Reading. Lafructose-1,6-diphosphate aldolase (FDA) is an enzyme that reversibly catalyzes the reaction that converts triosaphosphate into fructose-1,6-diphosphate. In the leaf this enzyme is located in the chloroplast (starch synthesis) and in the cytosol (sucrose biosynthesis). Transgenic plants were generated that express the E. coli fda gene in the chloroplast to improve the plant's performance by increasing the capacity of dealmidon biosynthesis in particular leaves and sucrose production in general. The leaves of plants that express the transgene fda showed a significant accumulation of starch in comparison with control plants that express a null vector, in aprticular in the early phase of the photoperiod, but presented a low sucrose content in the leaves. The transgenic plants also had a significantly greater root mass. Furthermore, the transgenic potatoes they express showed greater uniformity of solids.
