Abstract

A mortise lock cylinder (20) includes a turn-piece assembly (26) with a turn-piece (42) driving a first clutch (56) and a keyed cylinder assembly (28) driving a second clutch (104). A first portion of the turn-piece assembly (26) is received in the first end of a housing (30) and a second portion of the keyed cylinder assembly (28) is received in the second end of the housing (32). A cam (24) is positioned in a cam slot (38) between the housing ends (30, 32) and mounted for rotation. The mortise lock cylinder (20) is configured so that the cam (24) is always engaged with the first clutch (56). The second clutch (104) is coupled to the cam (24) via the first clutch only when the key (116) is inserted into the keyed cylinder assembly (28) and is otherwise biased away from the first clutch by spring (106). The arrangement allows the cylinder to only engage the lock when the key is inserted and saves axial space within the mechanism.
