Description

i 979 it NEW ZEALAND P. & S. • 9"^ «0L No.: Date: PATENTS ACT, 1953 197910 SI July 1981 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION "Improvements in or relating to building construction" I*Wk, PETRUS FRANCISCUS PEETERS, a Dutch Citizen of Coulter Road, R.D.I, Henderson, Auckland, New Zealand hereby declare the invention for which I / we pray that a patent may be granted to me/us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- ;- 1 - ;197910 ;This invention relates to building construction and in particular to a method of forming a building structure, a kit set for forming a building structure and/or a building structure using natural timber poles as the primary vertical support elements of the structure. ;It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of forming a building structure, a kit set for forming a building structure and/or a building structure which will at least provide the public with a useful choice. ;Accordingly, in one aspect, the invention consists in a method of forming a building structure including the steps of forming at least one machJ * ' long the outer longitudinal 'surface of a plurality of __mber poles; attaching connecting means to each of said machined edges to extend substantially along the full length thereof, said connecting means having a locating part engaged with the machined edge and an engagement part extending, in a substantially perpendicular manner, from said locating part; erecting the poles in substantially vertical spaced positions so that the machined edge of one pole faces a machined edge on an adjacent pole; and fixing wall section or sections between the machined edges by engaging the edges of said wall section or sections adjacent to said machined edges with the engagement parts of said connecting means.
In a further aspect the invention consists in a building structure comprising a plurality of substantially vertical 4faatural- timber poles each having at least one machined edge 2 197910 along the outer longitudinal surface thereof, the poles being erected such that a machined edge of one pole faces a machined edge of an adjacent pole; connecting means attached to each of said machined edges to extend substantially the full length thereof, said connecting means having a locating part engaged with the machined edge and an engagement part extending, in a substantially perpendicular manner, from said locating part; and a wall section or sections fixed between the machined edges of at least some adjacent poles by said connecting means, the edges of said wall section or sections adjacent said machined edges being engaged with the engagement parts of said connecting means.
To those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, many changes in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of the invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. The disclosures and the descriptions herein are purely illustrative and it is not our intention to limit the scope of the invention by those disclosures and descriptions, or otherwise, than by the terms of the appended cl aims.
The invention consists in the foregoing and also envisages constructions of which the following gives examples.
One preferred form of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a partial cross sectional view through a pole, fixing means and wall section formed into a building 197910 structure according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a side elevational view of a pole and fixing means used to form a building structure according to the invention; Figure 3 shows an elevational view of a door or window jamb detail suitable for a structure formed according to the invention; and Figure 4 shows a similar view to Figure 1 but incorporating i 9791 Referring to the drawings, according to the invention there is provided a method of forming a building structure, a kit set for forming a building structure and/or a building structure all of which involve the use of natural timber logs 5 to provide the vertical structural members of the building, the poles 5 having opposed parallel edge parts 6 such that in use the poles are erected in a grid according to the outline of the structure to be formed with at least one parallel edge part 6 of one pole facing a parallel edge part of another pole. Wall section or sections 7 may then be mounted between the parallel edge parts 6 and affixed to the poles 5 by fixing means 8.
While in some instances it may be possible to select the poles 5 so that opposed edge parts thereof are substantially parallel, it is preferred, and in most instances it will be necessary, to provide the opposed parallel edge parts 6 and to this end, as shown, shallow grooves or channels are preferably provided in opposed edges of the pole, the shallow grooves or channels preferably being provided by means of a router.
The wall section or sections 7 may take any desired form. As shown the wall section or sections are provided by modular panels, however it will be appreciated that conventional framing could be affixed to the poles to form a basis for subsequent cladding of any desired form.
The fixing means 8 preferably attaches between the parallel edged parts 6 of the poles and the wall section or sections 7 and, as shown in figures 1 and 2, comprises a channel member, the web 9 of which preferably fits neatly i979i0 within the groove or channel formed to provide the parallel edge part 6 in the pole.
If, as in the form shown, the channel 8 fits neatly within the routed groove 6 in the pole, a substantially sealed joint is provided. However this seal could be enhanced by the provision of an adhesive or other sealer provided between the channel 8 and the pole 5 and, if desired, between the channel 8 and the wall section or sections 7.
The channel section 8 is preferably formed from metal and may be either extruded or folded. However formed, the strip should be made from a substantially non-corrosive material or alternatively be treated with a anti-corrosive finish.
To enhance the natural wood appearance of the structure, a capping member 10 may be provided as shown in figure 1, to cover the outer limb of the channel which would otherwise be exposed to the outer surface of the structure.
Referring now to figure 2, to allow for cross bracing or alternatively to provide lintels the poles 5 are preferably provided with transverse notches 11 which can receive dressed timber bracing or lintels 12 projecting perpendicularly to the poles 5. The upper lintel member or brace may be affixed in position by a bolted connection 13 passing through the pole.
To allow for the provision of door jambs or braces, a channel shaped wooden member 14 may be provided which is fixed over the edge portions of the wall section or sections 7 and/or the lintel members 12 defining the apertures.. i 97910 Referring now to figure 4, a construction is depicted which is similar to that described with reference to figures 1 to 3 however in this embodiment the channel shaped fixing member 8 is replaced by a T-shaped fixing member 15. The cross bar 16 of the T fits within the groove formed to provide the parallel edge part 6 while the leg 17 of the T projects outwardly from and perpendicular to the cross bar 16.
The wall sections 7 are provided, on their vertical edges 18 with longitudinal slots 19 such that upon assembly the legs 17 of the T-shaped fixing members are fixed within the slots 19 of the wall sections. Again sealant indicated by reference numeral 20 is preferably fitted between the edges of the grooves forming parallel edges 6 and the fixing members and/or wall sections.
The selection of a T-shaped fixing member is but one alternative. Others will readily become apparent to those skilled in the art including a simple L-shaped bracket.
In use, to provide a building structure according to the invention, poles 5, preferably with machined parallel grooves 6 on the opposed edges thereof are erected in substantially vertical positions along the intended wall line or lines of the structure.
The spacing between the poles will preferably be a constant distance and will correspond substantially to the width dimension of modular wall panels 7.
Once the poles 5 have been erected, with the parallel grooves of one pole facing the parallel grooves in the \ adjacent poles, the wall sections can be fixed in position between the parallel edges by m^ns of the fixing means 8 or The floor and roofing structures can be fixed in position by conventional means.
It will thus be appreciated that the present invention provides a simple yet effective means of forming buildings structures in which the primary vertical structural members are natural poles. . /
