Nils Ingvar Jakobsson Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: 0 Preformed Wall Nib The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us Soo/--&74 10/04/819 5815/2 1 2 "PREFORMED WALL NIB" This invention relates to elements for use in the construction of partition walls for buildings, and more particularly to preformed elements for this purpose.
In every partitioned room provision is made for access by a doorway and sometimes a window opening, and a wall nib is provided to at least one side or end thereof. A wall nib, say for a doorway, is presently constructed by concealing a wall stud behind three separate panels of gypsum board cut and fixed to the stud to form a U-shaped covering. A similar arrangement exists for window openings and where intended for the sill or head the wall stud becomes a horizontal beam. Perforated metal beading is fixed over the two outside corners and plaster applied for finishing. Wall nibs may be spaced at various distances from the corners, or floor or ceiling, of rooms. The practice is time-consuming as well as 1o 65 being expensive.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a preformed 00 wall nib for use in the construction of partition walls which is convenient in use and relatively cheap to produce.
To this end the invention provides a preformed wall nib for use in the construction of partition walls, comprising a first wall stud, or beam; a single rectangular sheet of gypsum board, having confronting outer face S laminae separated by a gypsum core, folded U-shaped about said wall stud, t0 or beaim, a long lines provided by V-shaped grooves cut into one of said iouter face laminae and throughb said core but oot into the o ther of said outer face laminae; adhesive between said gypsum board sheet and said stud or beam; and a packing piece detachably fixed between the open arms of the U-shaped gypsum board sheet for rigid assembly.
The invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1. is a peirspective view of a preformed wall nib constructed according to this invention, and, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
The wall nib of the invention, as shown in the drawings, is designed for application to the side of a doorway or window and consists of a single rectangular sheet 3 of gypsum board which has confronting outer face laminae 4 and 5 enclosisg a core 6 of gypsum. The sheet 3 is folded IAD/377r IAD/37r 3 U-shaped, in a manner to be described hereafter, about a first wall stud 7 which may be of timber, sheet metal etc. and is of say 75mm x 50mm in cross-section.
Folding of the sheet 3 is effected by routing V-shaped grooves 8 and 9 in the inner face lamina 5 and through the core 6 and up to but not into the outer face lamina 4, which then serves as a hinge about which folding of the sheet 3 is effected. The spacing between the adjacent longitudinal edges 8A and 9A of the V-grooves will correspond to one, preferably the broadest, dimension 75mm) of the stud 7 whereby the latter is snuggly enclosed within the base of the U-shaped sheet 3. A suitable adhesive is applied between the stud 7 and the sheet 3, and preferably also within the V-grooves 8 and 9 before folding is completed. The arms 11 and 12 may be if uneven length.
A packing piece such as a second wall stud 10, which may be of timber, is fixed between the outer ends of the arms 11 and 12 of the U-shaped sheet 3 at intervals by screws 13, or other temporary fixing o means, to effect a rigid assembly. No glue is applied between the second stud 10 and the sheet 3. It will be appreciated that in this form the o preformed wall nib may be safely transported to a building site for installation in a partition wall.
When the wall nib is to be utilised the screws 13 are removed, the wall stud 10 withdrawn, and the length of one or both of the arms 11 and 12 of the U-shaped sheet 3 cut to suit the job requirements, e.g. the distance from the nib to the corner of the room. The wall stud 10 is then available to be re-inserted between the open arms 11 and 12 at any desired position and fixed thereat in a conventional manner. Conversely if the packing piece is one or more pieces intended to be discarded a fresh stud will be required. Where, of course, the wall nib is located some distance from the corner of the room no cutting of the arms 11 and 12 will be necessary and the wall stud 10 need not be withdrawn but permanently fixed in its position. The ends of the two wall studs 7 and 10 may protrude beyond the longitudinal edges of the sheet 3 for accommodation within conventional top and bottom plates (not shown) of the partition wall. In those instances where a metal-studded partition is to be erected the wall stud 10 will be composed of sheet metal.
It will be appreciated that a preformed wall nib of the above nature is quite sturdy and stackable for transport.
IAD/377r -4- "Wall nib" where referred to throughout this specification may be intended for either vertical or horizontal erection and may provide either the side frame member of any wall opening, such as a doorway or window, or even the head of a doorway or the head or sill of a window opening.
Whereas a preferred embodiment has been described in the foregoing passages it should be understood that other forms, refinements and modifications are feasible within the scope of this invention.
