Nye stammer av Phaffia rhodozyma som produserer astaxantin i mengder på-2700-8025 ug/g cellemasse regnet på tørrvekt er beskrevet. En fremgangsmåte til fremstilling av slike stammer ved mutagenese og seleksjon er også beskrevet, såvel som en fremgangsmåte til utvinning av astaxantin fra de dyrkede celler.
