Abstract

alpha, alpha, gamma- and alpha, gamma, gamma-isomers of trialkyladipic acids are prepd. by reacting trialkylcyclohexanol at a temperature below 65 degrees C with HNO3 and an initial concentration of moer than 65% in a ratio HNO3/organic material of not more than 3.5:1 but using at least the stoichiometric quantity of HNO3. The mixture must then be cooled until trialkyladipic acid crystallises. The pref. reaction temp. is 40-50 degrees C and the HNO3 used for the oxidation contain esp. trialkyladipic acid, esp. by using recycled acid. The reaction products may be used as starting materials in the preparation of polyamides. The process may be carried out on technical scale with very high yields and purity.
