Abstract
Appearance of light coloured or colourless organic materials is improved by treating the organic material with an agent contg. (1) at least one fluorescent cpd. selected from derivatives of furan, thiophene, styrene, oxazoles, imidazoles, thiazoles, oxadiazoles, thiadiazoles, stilbenes, triazoles, pyrazoles, coumarins, cyanins, thiophene dioxides, pyrazolines, naphthalimides, and carbostyryls, and (2) at least one fluorescent stilbene-4-yl-stilbene deriv. The combinations of cpds. (1) and (2) has an excellent optical brightening power. The combination also has excellent fastness to light, heat and migration. The cpds. (1) and (2) can be used with natural, synthetic and semi-synthetic organic materials including a wide range of organic polymers. The organic materials may be in the form of moulded or extruded articles, films, fibres, threads, powders, emulsions, solns., pastes, waxes or fabrics. The cpds. (1) and (2) can also be used in textile treating composns. of all kinds, as well as composns. for treating paper, leather etc. An optical brightener consisted of a mixt. of 1-N-ethyl-3-phenyl-7-dimethylamino-carbostyryl and 4,4'-bis-(2,4-disulphostyryl)-diphenyl.
