Abstract

There is disclosed a process for treating sewage or similar organic sludge to produce a pasteurised and dried product comprising the steps of: dividing the sludge into at least one first portion and at least one second portion; drying the first portion so that the first portion has a higher dry solids content than that of the second portion; mixing the first portion and the second portion to produce a mixture having a dry solids content which is intermediate between that of the first and second portions; adding an alkaline admixture to the mixture in order to pasteurise the mixture and thereby produce the product without employing subsequent drying by aeration.
