Abstract

La presente invención se refiere a un proceso para preparar de una dispersión acuosa de partículas de polímero neutralizadas de múltiples etapas que comprende las etapas de: 1) poner en contacto en condiciones de polimerización en emulsión a) una dispersión acuosa de primeras partículas de polímero que comprenden unidades estructurales de un monómero de ácido carboxílico, y unidades estructurales de un monómero no iónico con b) primeros monómeros que comprenden estireno o metacrilato de metilo o una combinación de estos, y un monómero de ácido carboxílico; para formar una dispersión acuosa de partículas de polímero de 2 etapas; luego 2) poner en contacto en condiciones de polimerización en emulsión la dispersión acuosa de las primeras partículas de polímero de múltiples etapas con segundos monómeros que comprenden a) metacrilato de metilo; b) acrilato de n-butilo, acrilato de 2-etilhexilo, acrilato de etilo o metacrilato de n-butilo, o una combinación de estos; c) un monómero de ácido carboxílico; y d) menos de 20% en peso de estireno, para formar una dispersión acuosa no neutralizada de partículas de polímero de 3 etapas; luego 3) neutralizar la dispersión acuosa no neutralizada de partículas de polímero de 3 etapas con una base para formar una dispersión acuosa de partículas de polímero neutralizadas de 3 etapas, en donde el primer y segundo monómeros forman una coraza que tiene una Tg calculada de menos de 50°C. El proceso de la presente invención es útil en la preparación de una composición que es útil como aditivo de tiempo abierto en formulaciones de recubrimientos.
