Abstract

Un derivado de furfural que tiene la fórmula química (1), en donde R representa hidrógeno, un grupo alquilo o un grupo acilo, se prepara en un procedimiento, tal procedimiento comprende hacer reaccionar un material de partida que contiene fructosa y/o glucosa con un compuesto que contiene un grupo hidroxilo líquido de fórmula R-OH en presencia de un catalizador ácido a una temperatura de reacción en el intervalo de 150 a 300 °C para producir una mezcla de reacción ácida primaria que comprende el derivado de furfural de fórmula química (1); separar parte del compuesto que contiene un grupo hidroxilo líquido de la mezcla de reacción ácida primaria para producir una mezcla de reacción ácida secundaria; neutralizar la mezcla de reacción ácida secundaria a un valor de pH de al menos 3 para obtener una mezcla de reacción neutralizada; y purificar la mezcla de reacción neutralizada para recuperar el derivado de furfural de la fórmula química (1).
