Baby Shower - Retro Sister Love

Thursday, October 10, 2013

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have caught a glimpse of the baby shower my sisters and I hosted for our gorgeous sister, Mandy and her baby boy on the way...
We decided to go with an all black and white theme, and let the mama of honor stand out in her signature, red color. Since I was in charge of decorations, I opted to make, instead of buy the decor (because even though I never have enough hours in the day, I still believe that there's something special about homemade) and found a super simple tutorial for tissue paper pom-poms that did the trick!
All the girls got involved, including our (not-so-little-anymore) baby niece. We had so much fun celebrating a boy on the way... There are A LOT of girls in this family, and everyone (including my hubs) is thrilled!
We also did it retro style, of course. Opting for red lips, polka dots, soft waves and pearls... which is a Dempsey girl signature! (Recognize my vintage dress I wore in Paris?) Mandy wore vintage too.
I printed a template for guests to fill out wishes for baby Dylan, (one of my favorite things given to my son at his baby shower) and captured a special moment of the dad-to-be filling out his hopes and dreams for his future son.
I'm so proud of my sis. She's come a long way and has been through so much. She had her first two girls when she was just a baby herself, and now she's finally getting her son. She reminded me how I threw her a baby shower for her first daughter, just the two of us, in a tiny Hollywood apartment, broke, with a homemade cake and a couple of balloons.
Every time I think about how far we've come, how lucky we are, and how much joy we have in our lives now... I feel so grateful.

Cheers to sisterhood, sons, family and friends... and having all your dreams come true! (PS Mandy's drinking sparkling juice, so don't get any crazy ideas!) I love you, sis! xx

Pregnancy Style: My sis

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Would you believe my gorgeous, pregnant sister stepped off of an airplane looking like this? To be fair, she was arriving home from Hawaii, of all places. A relaxing baby-moon of sorts, only not with her lovely man, but with my other sisters who treated her to some much needed indulgence. I'd be angry that I wasn't able to go, except I had just arrived home from Paris and was feeling heart-full of travel and wanting to plant my arms firmly around my babies.

If you must know, this woman here is a warrior. She's had some trying, tumultuous, tough times, but through it all... has always risen like a phoenix from the ashes. She inspires me. And now she's gonna be a mommy to a boy. And she's gonna rock it. And I couldn't be more proud.

Chain Gang Swap ~ Farewell to Summer

Friday, September 14, 2012

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you - I'm not still pregnant (I did have my baby boy here) ... but I've been dying to share the latest experiment of swapping a thrifted vintage piece with some of my favorite blogging sisters!
It's time for another vintage Chain Gang Swap! If you aren't familiar with the chain gang swaps we've done in the past, visit herehere and here to check it out.
This time the lovely Jen from Belle de Couture found this gem via thrift and we all fell in love! Visit her site here to see how she rocked it and how YOU can win it!
It is the perfect little floral piece to layer with. I loved wearing it over my favorite striped dress in my final pregnancy days...
And there is so much more you can do with it too!

Make sure to pop over and see how all three ladies styled it!

Pregnancy - 40 weeks!

Friday, August 31, 2012

Can you believe it? I'm officially 40 weeks! But the doc has given me a couple of different due dates, so they won't consider me overdue until September 10th. (eek!)
So, I've been doing more hanging out at home than being out and about these days...Well, scratch that. I've been out (trying to walk this baby outta me!) but less dressing up and more just trying to make it through and keep busy during these final days. The past week has been a bit torturous, if you ask me. I'm on pins and needles, not knowing when this baby is going to come and it has made me a bit nutty. I've shopped and cleaned and organized everything to death. And THEN SOME. I'm ready. Just hoping little man is too, before he goes into serious overtime and turns into a ten pound baby! (double eek!)

Hope you're enjoying the beauty posts. Forgive me if I disappear a bit next week. (Fingers crossed it's due to a fast, easy and beautiful delivery!)

Wish me luck!

39 weeks - Italian Food + A belly that won't pop!

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

I've been trying my best to be patient, guys. But I just want this little dude outta my belly already and into my arms.  Is that so wrong? This heatwave in Cali has been killing me, almost as much as the anticipation.
On Friday morning we had a false alarm that had me in the hospital, all geared up and ready to go. I was sent back home with the reassurance that I would likely be back that night or the next morning to deliver.

Well, it's Wednesday and I'm still chalk-full of baby. So rather than sitting at home and feeling like the human version of a ticking time bomb, I had the hubs take me and our little love out to dinner last night - Italian style.
Something about the warm marinara comfort food and the cozy atmosphere had me feeling much better and more at peace about things. I suppose it will just happen when it's supposed to happen.

Or maybe that was just the glass of chianti speaking that I happily indulged in...

What? I think the Italians would have approved.

Wish me luck!

xx
If you're ever in the Venice Beach area,
try C&O Trattoria for some seriously good Italian food.

Off to the doc! Maternity look 38 weeks!

Friday, August 17, 2012

I'm not going to tell you how much weight I've gained in total, but a visit to the doc yesterday had me rethinking my daily dose of meatball sandwich. I try not to focus on such nonsense, knowing I'll get back to pre-pregnancy shape by my birthday in December (that's my goal anyway)... but I did have the nurse check the numbers twice. (Something must be wrong with your scale!)
I guess there are more important things to focus on, like the (almost 7lb!) healthy little dude inside my belly. Apparently he's not ready to come this week, and we have a little itty bit left to go. Trying to hang on, hang in and still put some jewelry and makeup on once in a while...

These bits came off upon immediate entrance to my house, however. I type to you barefoot and in a topknot! Hope you have a fabulous weekend. xx

My Maternity Photo Shoot

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

You may remember getting a sneak peek here and at my baby shower here, but due to several requests, (and even at the risk of getting too racy for the blogging world!) I thought I'd share a few of my personal faves from my maternity photo shoot.
If you're lucky enough to have an extremely talented photographer friend like I have, (check out her site here!) then capturing these types of shots are a breeze. It also helps to be in the comfort of your own home.
In honor of my Moroccan Baby Showermy makeup artist sis drew a design (free hand!) on my belly and I loved the result. The shots turned out a little a lot sexier than what I had done with Stella a few years back, but I'm glad I did it!

My little guy will either be red-faced embarrassed about it when he's older, or think his mom is super cool. (Let's hope for the latter!)
We did still manage to capture some traditional and sweet family photos...
A slice of our life and home...
Just waiting for the next addition.
Ain't love grand?

All packed up and ready to go

Thursday, August 9, 2012

A couple weeks ago, I woke up in a panic. It was 2:30am and I realized I hadn't packed my bag for the hospital yet. So I did. At 2:30 in the morning. I also did some baby-boy-to-be laundry,  mopped the floors and wrote another To Do List.

Then today I went to the doctor and was ordered to LIE DOWN, rest, and take it easy. 'Cuz the truth is, little dude is better off the longer he stays in there. So I'm going to do as I'm told and make peace and rest a priority, instead of all those stupid things I think need to come first. And I will do it for him.

Love you, little guy. Let's make it at least two more weeks!

{In case you missed it, check out this post where I break down my personal favorite essentials for what to pack for the hospital.}

Mama Boho Style - Maternity 37 weeks!

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

My sweet sister loaned me this dress she found via thrift, and although I'm usually not a lavender fan, I really loved the flow and double layering effect. You should see how different it looks on her. Cinched at the "actual" waistline - total cuteness... But I was happy to take it for a spin maternity style in my signature boho look.
Notice my "done button" above? Yep. We're getting there. It's nice to know that if little dude came right now, most likely all would be well. 37 weeks is considered full term, and I tell ya, I'm full DONE.
These past few weeks have flown by, with so much going on (I'll be sure to post pix of Stella's 3rd birthday party soon), and so much to do in preparation for little man. Except for the nights, of course, with sleep becoming one of those rare anomalies, and one of those things I just remember in a foggy state of restlessness.
Sort of like my waistline. Which I'm eager to remember very soon, and in a very clear way.
Until then, I'll try to treasure these last few moments with my beloved little man bump.

Leopard + Denim - Maternity look 36 weeks!

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

I found this leopard shirt dress via thrift for a few bucks very early on in my pregnancy...
It was way too big at the time, but I knew it had potential.
My super stylish pal who was accompanying me that day was not in agreement when I picked it up off the racks. I genuinely trust her opinion, so I normally would have hesitated at her hesitation, but I just had a feeling it would work... eventually.
And eventually it did.

{Everything (sans purse & shoes) thrifted for under $10}

I found you two similar leopard dresses at Shopbop and Macy's.

*Feeling good and getting big! 36 weeks and counting!

Baby + Mama ~ What to pack for the hospital!

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Nothing makes me calm like organization, so I sat down to make a list of all the things I'll be packing in my hospital bag soon. Since this is my second time around, I've learned a few things... and it's all about keeping it simple. No need to overpack.

Top Ten Essentials:
  1. Nursing gown and robe - You'll want something nice to cover up with when you duck out to see your little love in the nursery, and when you take those first precious photos. I'm obsessed with Cake Lingerie's stuff. I raved about their nursing bra here, and these sets are no exception. Luxurious, cozy & so cute! (Get the Apple Crumble Robe here, and the Rocky Road Chemise here.)
  2. Going home outfit for baby - A friend gifted my little man some outfits from Kicky Pants and I fell in love. Organic, deliciously soft & so sweet. This one avail here. (Don't worry, the hospital will arm you with your first set of diapers and swaddlers to take your bundle home.)
  3. Flip flops or slippers - No one wants to walk around with bare feet. I'd recommend sandals over slippers so you can also wear them home, and save space in your suitcase. (Weather permitting, of course!)
  4. Music playlist - Whether it's an iPod, iPhone, old fashioned CD or boom box, make sure your music conveys the mood you want to create in the room. Alexi Murdoch from the Soundtrack "Away We Go" sang my daughter gently into this world, and I think I may do a repeat for little man. The song "All My Days" breaks my heart (in a good way) every time I hear it.
  5. Makeup Bag with the following - Toothbrush/toothpaste, brush, hair clips/hair ties, razor, shampoo/conditioner (I like to use WEN - a one step process), contact lenses/glasses, hand sanitizer for visitors, & some light makeup - concealer, mascara, lip balm & a bit of blush should do the trick. I recommend Stila's Convertible Color, it works for both cheeks and lips and comes in a cute little compact!
  6. Going home outfit for you - Bring something loose & easy but still (remotely) put together. A cotton maxi dress works great. And (sorry to say) but you will still look pregnant, so a maternity dress you already have will work as well. Some cute & cheap choices at Old Navy
  7. Your favorite pillow - You will want this. Trust me.
  8. Camera, camcorder and all of the charging equipment that comes with it. Wanna get fun and go vintage? This one from Modcloth made me swoon.
  9. Cozy socks - Your feet will get cold. Your lady bits will hurt. Let's try to make things as comfortable as possible.
  10. Birth plan - Have it written out and submitted to your doctor before hand, but also take one with you. It's important to be on the same page with the doctor and staff regarding how you want things to go down. For tips on writing one, go here

Hot Pink + Glasses + Bump

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Remember when I said it's about time to slow down?
Well, I'm meticulously trying to tick off all of the things on my {GIANT} To Do list, which among other things includes finalizing some paperwork for a new business venture. Something I can't wait to begin once I'm up and at 'em again towards the end of the year!
So what to wear when you still want to feel in the game? Duh. Glasses. And something bright and bold(er) than the bump you're sporting.

A Red Dress

Monday, July 16, 2012

I was so happy when I found this little number on a recent thrifting jaunt here, and had planned on wearing it as a tunic with leggings for the maternity days, and a sexy, little red mini dress post bump...
But who says you have to wait? Besides, nothing feels better in these last few weeks of pregnancy (and in this heat!) than being comfy and free. (I did sport some shorts underneath when wearing it out to dinner, though!)
