Fancy faux bob tutorial!

Friday, October 19, 2012

I'm a big fan of the faux bob. Mostly because at least once a month I want to hack my hair completely off. Now that I have two babies, the urge is getting even stronger. So to keep me away from the kitchen scissors (I've made my stylist promise to never cut it off right after I have a baby) I found another way to get my fix - a seriously cute faux bob created by just using a headband!

Here's how you do it:
1. Start with a little wave and texture in your hair. Find the prettiest, glitziest headband and place it around your head like a crown. Grab a hold of your mane in the back like a low ponytail.

2. Tuck the ends of the pony up and over into the headband.

3. Roll. And roll again. Tucking tightly as you go. (The amount of times you roll is dependent on the length and thickness of your hair. In my case, I rolled three times.)

Miraculously, no bobby pins were needed! But if you want a more secure and stylized version, feel free to play around with bobby pins. Mist with a little hair spray and you're done!

Let me know if you give it a try!

DIY ~ Scarf from old T-shirt!

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

I made this super easy scarf from an old linen T-shirt. I found the tutorial on Pinterest (here) and wanted to share with you just how easy it truly was. This shot was taken about one week after having my baby boy (does the lipstick conceal my utter exhaustion?) I'll tell you one thing... this scarf has gotten a lot of use, concealing my absolute udders due to breastfeeding.
TMI? Sorry about that. Here's the tutorial...

Step 1: Snip in a straight line below the bust of the shirt.

Step 2: Cut strips (about an inch apart) at the bottom of the tee.

Step 3: Pull the strings to create a longer, skinner strip.

Step 4: Loop it around your neck!
Done! xx

5 Minute Fake Bob

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

OK, so I have a lot of hair.  And while I'm not complaining, sometimes it's a bit much, (and heavy, and hard to deal with...) I know, I know, I'll shut up.  But quite often, I find myself tempted to just hack it all off into a daring (and darling) little bob, as I did once before.
But because I am avoiding the cliché that is "every new mom cuts her hair",  I continue to refrain from what I believe would be sheer genius (props to all the short haired ladies out there!!) Instead, I fake it.  As seen herehere, and here.

5 min Fake Bob - How To:
Make sure your hair is nice and wavy. Have some sort of body or curl going on. (I always use hot rollers - see trick here.) Use a good amount of hairspray too, muss it all up. Hair with product in it is so much more malleable.
Next, twist your hair into a semi-loose bun. Secure it in the mid to low base of your head with a hair tie.

Pull the sides out a bit while keeping the bun intact. This will give the "illusion" of a bob.
Tuck the bun part up under at hat, or if you're not wearing a hat, flip the bun under the "bob" part and secure with pins. (But truth be told, a hat makes it much easier to disguise!)
Finish with some tucks and tweaks but be casual about it. It's a messy undone look.

Let me know if you try it! xx

The Perfect Nude Lip

Thursday, December 16, 2010

You know I love me some red lip. But if I had to be honest, my go-to makeup look when going out is smoky eyes and a nude lip.
Just like finding the perfect red lip routine, going nude takes a certain amount of prep.

And lucky for me, two of my sisters and one of my dear friends are professional makeup artists who keep me stocked with tricks and tools to get it right.

1: Brush your lips with a toothbrush and some sugar mixed with warm water to remove dry skin.

2: Apply lip balm lightly all over lips.

3: Gently brush on a thin layer of concealer. Blot.
4: Apply a nude pencil liner on lipline and fill in the center as well. Use a deeper nude for darker toned lips, such as MAC Spice. A lighter tone for medium lips, such as MAC Carmellow or Whirl. A fair pencil for pale lips, such as MAC Subculture.

5: Toss a gold or yellow-gold gloss on top, Such as Becca Granita, or Becca Champagne.

Beauty Trick: Baby Soft Skin

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

This is an easy one, girls. Next time you're in the bath or shower, take a little baby oil in there with you.

Once you're finished lathering, shaving, singing, and rinsing (and while still in the shower)...

Dab a little baby oil in the palm of your hand, just as you would lotion.

Smooth it all over your skin before you dry off.

Towel dry as usual.

No need for post shower lotion.

Easy, sexy and your skin will glow! xx

Grey Styling

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

I have about three styling projects going on at the same time, which would seem overwhelming to some, but I just enjoy it so damn much, it rarely feels like work. (Or is it because I always do so with a little bit of champagne?)
One is a complete closet overhaul (that I recently did for myself - see story and tips here!)
The other two are both for destination weddings. Weddings are a different animal completely, because not only are we shopping for the actual BIG DAY, but for the days (or weeks!) of vacation time pre and post wedding. (See an article I did on wedding style shopping here.)
The complete closet overhaul is something we should all do from time to time. Especially if you're currently opening your closet doors, hating everything in there, LOVE fashion and know how you want to look, but don't know where to start!

Here's some basic tips and tricks I've come up with to help you along. I hope this brings some inspiration... xx

Beauty Trick: Hot Rollers=Hot Hair

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Another hair trick I've been doing for some time now (nearly every day, honestly!) is hot rollers. They may seem a bit grandma to you, but I've found it's the easiest way to get bouncy and full waves in under 15 minutes flat.
I just don't have the patience to sit there with a curling iron. And if I shower at night, let my hair dry naturally, my morning routine goes a little something like this.
  1. Heat rollers
  2. Set rollers
  3. Get dressed
  4. Dash of makeup
  5. Remove rollers and run fingers through hair
  6. Bit of shine serum, spritz of hairspray, and I'm off!
The biggest tip I can give you about hot rollers is to use very few. And roll big, thick sections of your hair. You don't want little ringlets, you want big volume. Generally I roll about five to six sections, max.
  • One high on the head (this gives the most volume on top!)
  • Two on each side of your face, rolled forwards.
  • One on the back center of your head.
  • And the remaining lower pieces split into two.
Now I realize I do have a lot of hair. (Which isn't always easy. See previous post about chopping it!) But I don't want to hear any complaints about being unable to do this because your hair is shorter. I've been doing this just past "post bob" status, when my hair was nearly skimming my shoulders. Adjust the sections of hair to fewer rollers, and remember ~ ROLL BIG.
A little shaky-shake...
Some spray...
And we're done!
(Lipstick - Nars Heatwave)
I'm such a fan of rollers for volume, that I even pop a few in before I'll be wearing my hair straight for the day. Once I take them out, I run a flat iron quickly through and it gives an entirely different effect. Big volume on perfectly glossed straight hair.
Let me know if you try it!

Fishtail braid

Thursday, October 14, 2010

My favorite way to wear a fishtail braid is when it's most unexpected. If my look is polished, I like my hair to be a bit messy and undone.

    Beauty Trick: Gorgeous Gams

    Thursday, September 30, 2010

I'm a fan of the occasional spray tan (best one in L.A. here) but for the days when that's just not possible, I have a trick that keeps my (naturally pasty) legs looking golden, flawless and shimmer-tastic!

    • Mix equal parts of your favorite foundation (it works best if you have a color that's a bit dark for you, such as your summer color, or perhaps a foundation accidentally purchased a shade too dark.)
    • And equal parts of your favorite lotion. I like to use the kind that has a bit of shimmer to it.
    • And a touch (just a touch!) of self tanning cream.
    • Rub on legs as you would regular lotion. Use the remaining on your arms.
    • Wash your hands. Let your legs dry a bit before putting on clothing. They will look flawless!

    Beauty Trick: Heavenly scented hair

    Thursday, September 16, 2010

Want a way to make your perfume last, and keep your hair smelling lovely all day?

I've been doing this trick for years, and it's so easy!

    All you'll need...
    A rounded hair brush

Your favorite perfume (One of mine!)
Dab or spray your favorite scent onto your hair brush.  When you run it through your hair with the hair dryer, the heat seals the perfume into your locks, keeping them heavenly scented for hours.
I also love how pretty my cabinet smells every time I open it! xx
