August 30 is National Toasted Marshmallow Day. The Simpsons know how to celebrate!
May 21 is National Waitstaff Day. Here are three lovely servers from Mel’s Diner in Phoenix, AZ.
September 3 is Welsh Rarebit (also called Welsh Rabbit) Day. In case you didn’t know, Welsh rabbit contains no rabbit. And here’s Bugs Bunny in a 1951 short called “French Rarebit,” which does contain a rabbit but isn’t Welsh.
R.I.P. Glen Campbell
July 26 is National Bagelfest Day. Remember the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer returned to work at H&H Bagels after a 12-year strike? In this clip, he drops a wad of chewed gum into the bagel dough.
In memory of Adam West
Adam West, TV’s “Batman,” died yesterday (June 9, 2017) at age 88. Here’s a novelty song he recorded during his Batman days.
June 2 is National Fish & Chip Day. When I hear “fish and chips,” the first thing that pops into my head is the jingle for the 1970s fast-food chain Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips.
More about Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips and the real Arthur Treacher on Michael’s TV Tray.
Can you believe it’s already June?
The first week of May is National Raisin Week. In this 1982 California Raisin commercial, Molly Ringwald is a raisin-pushing babysitter. This was two years after she was sacked from The Facts of Life in its infamous second-season character purge, but before she hit it big with the Brat Pack. The kid sticking her greedy hand into the raisin box is Emily Schulman, who, three years later, played nosy neighbor Harriet on Small Wonder.
In memory of Zsa Zsa Gabor
Zsa Zsa Gabor—actress, socialite, and television personality—has died at age 99.
In this trailer, Gabor stars in Queen of Outer Space, a 1958 movie that takes place in the distant future—1985! A “daring band of explorers” lands on an all-female planet where they are “captured by long-limbed beauties.” The astronauts experience “the indescribable delights of the female planet.”
Dec. 17 is National Maple Syrup Day.
Remember that episode of The Facts of Life when Tootie had an imaginary friend who was full of maple syrup? And then she got suspended for trying to unscrew Mrs. Garrett’s head? What do you mean, that never happened?
TV Sidekicks Blogathon: I Love Ethel
I love Lucy—but there’s someone I love even more. She’s one of the earliest and best-known TV sidekicks. I’m referring, of course, to Ethel Mae Mertz (née Potter), Lucy Ricardo’s best friend and partner in crime. For me and a lot of others, she is the most relatable of the four main I Love Lucy characters.
