What boss was this for you?
Just got ER (very late to the game as a 49yo who has never played a soulslike) and found Godrick today after work…wish me luck!!!
How’d it go! I was out star gazing so I didn’t catch this sooner
It’s just so cool to slowly work out how to beat these bosses, then backslide and still stick with it, then to finally break through and defeat them…big yell when I won!! And it’s just so gorgeous and fighting larger than life enemies and the music. And I’m barely started!!
See anything fun in the stars?
Hell yeah, I am glad you enjoyed it! Souls games are my favorite for exactly that reason. If you are a fan of platformers I really recommend hollowknight.
I’m out in the desert so it was genuinely the most full sky I had ever seen. Moonless as well so it was quite bright; I didn’t realize how blue the stars could be. Granted I was on mushrooms so the color may have been influenced by that. Either way I spent a few hours finding constellations and when I was peaking looked at the orion nebula. Truly stunning, never seen anything like that in person. 10/10 would do again
sounds like a wonderful evening! so fun to be awestruck and enchanted by the universe while on mushrooms.
i picked up hollow knight on sale a while ago and am excited to play it too. thx for the rec!!
Hell yeah! (ง’̀-‘́)ง
Btw, we have a weekly “what are you playing” thread https://lemmy.zip/post/60677790 if you ever wanna share about your playthough, ask for advice or whatever. It’s always nice hearing a new player first impressions, so consider dropping by sometime ;)
thx! really appreciate the invite :)
Related, I also run a weekly recommendations thread over on !patientgamers@sh.itjust.works where we discuss games we’re playing that are over a year old! I usually make a new post every Wednesday. Feel free to stop by and contribute, I’d love to hear more about your journey!
You got it Matty!
Just a word of advice: don’t listen to this meme. The games have a reputation for difficulty, which makes people think they’re supposed to slam their head against a boss until they win (which is how most games work). Souls-likes, when designed well, are made so when you find a boss and struggle, there’s many other options to win.
The best for ER is to go find some content you haven’t done and do it. You’ll unlock some new equipment and upgrade material while farming runes for leveling or spending. The teleports always being available mean it’s really easy to just go do something else. Just mark it on your map and go do something else. Next time you come back you’ll be stronger.
Thanks! Yeah, It’s been nice to get out on torrent and reset for a bit after grinding in the catacombs and stuff.
What kind of build or starter class are you trying?
I chose samurai and I got the Bloodhounds Fang which is a super fun weapon. I switched out my headgear so I can stay med weight. Just can’t get over how visually awesome the game is too!!
Yeah what a fantastic weapon! Bleed + Dex is very powerful too. Playing with a shield?
This is still Radiance in Hollow Knight for me. I cannot beat that fucker.
Haha, try absolute radiance
What are your talking about? It only took me like 10 hours or so… To learn how to consistently get to that fucker.
The Bloody Crow of Cainhurst in Bloodborne was probably my toughest boss fight to date.
The scaling of the hunters on higher ng levels is so broken, once you get to like ng5 or 6 their health pools are just impossible. You just spent what feels like forever fighting the crow, basically perfectly because a single bullet takes away most of your life, chipping away at his health. And then once it gets below like half or something you have to now be incredibly aggressive because he will heal, and wipe out the last 5 minutes of work.
He’s just impossible. But even other hunters like younger Maderas Twin just can’t be defeated, or at least, I couldn’t manage it
i only fought him on new game, but it was my first souls like, and i had done co-op with my partner for most of the rest of the game, so he was still pretty darn tough. i have heard before that they get pretty cray at high ng+ levels, but i can only imagine. honestly sounds more like a slog than a fun challenge to me though.
The crow is very challenging on any difficulty! Its cool you had a friend helping you with coop, I have been that friend a few times! I really love the coop in Bloodborne
Hot take: don’t do NG+
Why not? I do very much like playing ng, ive started several characters just to play through the game from the beginning.
So fucking understandable. Still a favorite of mine though, as hard as it was.
Fucking Guardian Ape. It doesn’t make any sense - I usually manage to beat the duo on my first try! But the ape himself usually takes me significantly longer than Sword Saint Isshin.
I’ve now settled on a strategy where I wittle down his first phase as quickly as possible, and if I haven’t used too many heals, I’ll kite him around and only attack while he’s locked in the forward lunge attack. That way I can usually manage the second phase on my first (good) attempt.
His attacks on his first phase are really hard to track. It took me a minute to master his first phase, he can combo kill you quickly, his grab attacks are all but one-shot fatal, and a lot of his attack chains are varied, so if I managed to get a couple of whacks in the last time he did a certain move, the next time he extends the combo and pummels me.
My strategy of first phase has become to hit him with oil, flame vent him, imbue my weapon with flame and just bully him with it until he recovers. Rinse and repeat. A bit of a safe strat, but it def makes 1st phase much quicker while not exposing yourself to much danger
Maybe Malenia on my first playthrough of Elden Ring? That victory took me forever the first time.
Attempt wise? Consort Radahn RL1 on my first RL1 run took the most attempts. I was experimenting with a lot of strategies and he can kill you so fast even in Phase 1 and in Phase 2 the splash damage that doesn’t really matter on a level run is just brutal at RL1. My buff-stacking strategy gave me the win eventually and on my second RL1 run I beat Consort Radahn in far fewer attempts with that strategy.
“I am Malenia, Sword of Miquella.”
“I know. You tell me that every minute and a half.”
Lobster, Another Crabs Teasure
Nephro, captain of the guard I think is his name?
Yeah thats the bastard
The gimmick dragon boss in Demon’s Souls.
But only because I seem to have a bug that causes the SOB to hit me with their flame breath all the way down the fucking hallway you need to cross to even reach the actual room.

There’s been a few. My first ever go at a soulslike Ludwig felt unsurmountable. Days of attempts turned into weeks, could not get phase 2 to click. I wanted to do it right so no summons, Victory tasted like the sweetest nectar, and it remains my favourite soulslike fight ever since.
Right now it is Demon of Hatred, Charmless, ng+5
Its funny because whatever part of me that gets mad when I lose at games has just like completely burned out. Just dead-eyed starting a new run.
I do like that Sekiro has the reflections you can practice with. But charmless is quite hard, it put the challenge back in the game after basically mastering the game on charmed. Having to nail all the deflections really tightens up the game.
I had become accustomed to buffing up and using prosthetics to speed up the fights, but now I find I have to play bosses more or less straight. Fights are much longer, trading damage is a waste, prosthetics are useful but using the ceremonial dagger is really expensive and I found myself running out of flasks with most of his third phase left. Using Malcontent to finish off the last 3/4 of his third phase doesn’t work either, even with buffs it takes down like only 1/4 ish of his health bar.
On ng5 I reckon his HP is at least 2x-3x what it is on ng or ng+. With Charmless? Idk how that scales maybe another 25% HP and posture. He does 25% more vit and posture, and burn status builds up extremely rapidly. I wonder if I attempted charmless on ng+ instead of ng+5 if I’d have better luck. But I’m so friggin close!
Ornstein and Smough is the boss I’ve had the most trouble with I think. Since then, I honestly don’t think there’s been a boss that took more than maybe 20 tries, very few more than 10. I’m not sure if O&S are just particularly hard for where they are in the game or if it’s just because I’m more used to the games now. Probably some of both.
It’s as simple getting the parry and the- and I’m dead.
I mean, it’s honestly as simple as just being both perfect and lucky for 5-30 minutes. I don’t see why everyone doesn’t just do that
Eigong… and then the other Eigong…
Nameless King in DS3. It was my first soulslike game and I played sword and shield. Incredible feeling finally beating him.
