For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Invisible Life (2019), based on Martha Batalha’s 2016 novel of the same name. It is a Brazilian drama set in 1950s Rio de Janeiro, following a pair of sisters who are separated by their conservative father after one of them becomes pregnant out of wedlock. Their father lies to them both, telling each that they abandoned the other. They unknowingly live in the same city for years afterward. Will they reunite? I guess we’ll find out. This is the best-known and best-regarded work to date of director Karim Ainouz. Excellent reviews all around, and one of the highest-rated Brazilian films on Letterboxd.

After that is The Woman in the Window (1944), a noir-thriller fro renowned auteur Fritz Lang, whose film Fury (1936), Scarlet Street (1945), and The Big Heat (1953) we have previously watched. It follows a man (Edward G. Robinson)) who becomes infatuated with the portait of a woman, only to meet the woman herself, at which point he immediately becomes swept up into a web of intrigue, in which he kills the lady’s jealous boyfriend in self-defense. Uh-oh, the guy’s best friend just so happens to be the DA assigned to the murder case. How will he get out of this conundrum? We’ll just have to watch and see. This is considered one of the best noirs of the 1940s.
