For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007), a Gainax series about a dystopian future in which evil nobles have forced the masses underground with the help of giant superpowered robots. A couple of underground laborers manage to escape to the surface and quickly begin fighting against the evil machines oppressing humanity. Expect the usual anime antics from there, with characters shooting beams and glowing to solve the plot and such. Episodes 13 through 18 tonight.

After that is Mia and the Migoo (2008), a French animated feature about a girl who musventure through a tropic landscape to find her father, only to discover a forest inhabited by giant ape-like spirits called the Migoos. Uh-oh, their habitat is threatened by a greedy developer’s new resort project. Will the forces of eco-friendliness save the day? I guess we’ll find out. Reviews compare this to Princess Mononoke (1997) and Ferngully: The Last Rainforest (1992). Director Jacques-Remy Girerd is otherwise best-known for Raining Cats and Frogs (2003), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this, so let’s watch.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
