“Dr Now what’s wrong with me?”
“You weight 650 pounds.”
“What do you do?”
“You must eat less to lose weight.”
“…”
“Okay bye.”
Damn get me a lab coat I could do this shit.
We rightfully recoil at the fact that circus freak shows used to be a thing but the reality is that they’re just televised now
These people are promised that their surgeries will be paid for if they are willing to be televised. Deeply exploitative.
You don’t even have to be seen by your community pointing and laughing anymore
yep, they never went away, they just got worse
Yeah I do think the show is pretty gross and exploitive, but then so is most reality TV.
Dr Now is kinda funny tho.
The Boy With an Arse for a Face and
The Woman With a Second Head that Hates Herthere’s another one with a guy with like nine penises

TV Shows like that are fat-shaming propaganda that’s intended to drown out criticisms of food deserts, rising cost of living, and rising unhealthiness of the food corporations are willing to sell to you.
I haven’t watched it in a long time, but I remember a lot of the people on it having some kind of personal food-related trauma, and the show’s answer to this trauma is always “tough love” from Dr Now, who plays the role of the straight talking no nonsense unwoke serious old man with a lab coat.
This is defiantly true, but having seen chunks of this show over my moms shoulder (I’ve never watched a full episode with her cuz I think it’s gross) some of these people do seem to have issues with taking accountability. Like there’s a lot of scenes of them complaining that their family isn’t helping them enough, followed by them yelling at their family when they call them out for not following the diet plan.
Idk how much of that is reality TV editing, also I understand their being filmed in a very humiliating position, but still it’s a very toxic way to behave towards people who are trying to help you.
I don’t think people who are really good at taking accountability and holding themselves responsible for their decisions get to the point where they not only weigh 600lbs, but also need to go on a TV show to fix that.
Yeah that’s true. I just wonder how you’re supposed to get it across to them that late in the game that while yes, there are systematic contributing factors to their problem, if they want to get better they’re going to have to take on some responsibility themselves.
Being 600lbs is also around 5 standard deviations above the mean American weight, so systemic and individual factors have to take part on account of how uncommon it is.
Yeah I’m a bit overweight myself but like, to get to 600lbs you’re basically in bed all day eating multiple large pizzas yourself. You have to be in a pretty unique situation for that to even be possible.
600 lbs is huge, but not bedridden. People can still move at that weight, with difficulty. And really, if you have the right career, you can limit your daily physical activity to an incredibly small amount.
Pushing back on this as the point of reality tv is pitting people against each other and framing the Othered, in this case fat people as deviant and faulty. I would investigate what makes you feel this way and judge these people based on how a reality tv show, of all things, frames their lives.
I mean a marxist understanding of how people live in a society and are the products of their social conditions would help in understanding that there can also be loss of agency that is actually very violent to the person.
Solidarity to all the victimized fat folks who are abused by this vile tv show, clearly it appeals to some who need to feel like they are better than others.
Me and my therapist put in dozens of hours working on my eating disorder so that my primary doctor could give me a recipe for baked brussels sprouts and push me out the door
pro tip: cut them into quarters for best crispiness
yeah this is what i do to my primary doctors too
Nice of you put some mushrooms in it too.
Well baked brussel sprouts are good
Yes they are. I don’t know why he thought I didn’t like them already (oh wait I do it’s because I’m fat and fat people don’t like vegetables lol)
The problem in many cases is liking vegetables too much
[hospital public address system] Dr. Then, Dr. Later, you’re needed in surgery to assist Dr. Now.
Larry, Curly, and Moe dash into the shot, crash into each other, and Moe slaps the two others, saying “Why, I oughta…”
Wow Thanks, I’m Cured, the show.
Where you can overturn decades of built-up habits and cues and human physiology with a reductionist whim.
Half the people watching that show just want someone to hate so they can feel better about their own consumption habits, and the other half just have a fat fetish.
It’s so funny to watch, just like watching intervention, where within the first 10 minutes the “subject”(couldn’t think of a better word) directly lays out some kind of trauma that led them down their path and the remaining 30 minutes is pretending they can just will it away and is lazy if not.
Oh no I 100% agree the show is exploitive and gross.
I just found it funny how every episode Dr Now waltzes in and is like “yes your are overweight”. Wow brilliant deduction there Sherlock!
