With both his post-Spacemen 3 projects, the Darkside and now Alphastone, Bassman has continued to explore the nebulous waters of dreamy guitar-heavy ambient rock to stirring effect. Avoiding Spiritualized's transcendent, gospel-inflected pop in favor of danceable, mechanized rhythms and electronic washes, Alphastone achieves a maximum of atmosphere with a minimum of pretension. 1998 HarvestDark Star were an English rock band from London whose music mixed dark psychedelia with a dub undertow and noisy effects-laden guitar.
Christian ‘Bic’ Hayes, Laurence O’Keefe and David Francolini, all former members of Levitation, formed Dark Star in 1998 and signed to the now defunct Harvest Records, the progressive rock subsidiary of EMI. Dark Star released several EPs and a debut album Twenty Twenty Sound produced by Steve Lillywhite. In 2000, the band had two top 40 singles with re-releases of “Graceadelica” and “I Am The Sun”, both from their debut album.
Following the touring and promotion of Twenty Twenty Sound, the band entered the studio to record the follow up. Strangers And Madmen was mooted as the lead off single and received its first play on The Evening Session, hosted by Steve Lamacq. Due to a change in personnel at EMI and a general lack of interest from the label in the new material, it was agreed the two parties would part. The band split in 2001 with no official announcement, to pursue different projects. They were unable to release the already recorded second album as the rights to the music belonged to EMI. A bootleg of pre-master mixes of this album is now in circulation, entitled Zurich - it is not known where the title actually came from or whether it was the albums intended title.01. The Essence is new wave / synth pop band formed in 1984 in Roterdam, Holland. The Essence signed to Midnight Music after a year of gigging. In 1986 the collaboration resulted in the release of their debut album “Purity” preceded by the 12” single “Endless Lakes”, which were both received very well, especially in Holland and Germany. A track very popular with the radio- and club-DJ’s was “The Cat”, which was remixed and released as a second 12”. 1987 saw the release of the follow-up album “A Monument of Trust” and the single “A Mirage”, a catchy tune that made the top 10 in Spain.
The popularity of the band continued to grow with the release of the third album “Ecstasy” in 1988. The videos of the singles “Only For You” (1989) and “Like Christ” (1990) got regular airplay on MTV. The group recorded their fourth CD “Nothing Lasts Forever”, a powerful and dark concept album, released November 1991, making its way to an ever growing following around the world, including Japan and the USA.A “best of…” CD was released by Cherry Red Records in 1994 entitled “Dancing In The Rain”, accompanied by the single “A Mirage ‘94 - The Mixes”.01.
