Vertical tabs already exist as a Firefox extension, but Firefox is still loading the latest developments in Covid-19, which wipes out most of the time you’d expect to save.
These suggestions are aimed at both the Opera browser and the OperaGX browser on any desktop.
Add the choice to have your tabs bar vertical with an adjustable width
Add settings to choose which side the Tabs Bar and your Side Bar sit on. (ie. having your tabs on the left and sidebar on the right or whatever feels right)
These are technically two suggestions, but you physically can not integrate vertical tabs if you do not move the sidebar some place else, & having the ability to choose where you want your tabs and sidebar is really satisfying and useful.
When you have a lot of tabs open, the current bar is hell to navigate. You can’t read anything, so you keep clicking around trying to find the right tab. It slows everything down, especially if you’re researching something with a lot of sources.
Vertical tabs fix that. If you can adjust the width, you can actually read the titles and scan through everything quickly. You can also keep the bar small when you don’t need to see the names and make it wider when you do.
Opera already has tab groups and colors, which are great organization features, but it doesn’t help much if the tabs themselves are too cramped to read. This makes those features actually useful.
