I've been thinking a lot about how we should talk about generative AI recently and here's something I realized; focusing on the ethics of generative AI (or lack thereof) is a waste if you're not also mentioning the practical issues, ESPECIALLY the fact that legally speaking LLM code inherently makes all software licenses unenforceable because only humans can own copyright. If you're wondering why that's important, I've seen enough people have absurd breakdowns over people daring to make package scripts for, say, the AUR to realize that a lot of talented programmers are also extreme control freaks. So it might be worthwhile to mention that LLM generated output is uncopyrightable.

    Re: LB:
What appears as critique – yearning for smaller, weirder, more human spaces – often functions as brand repair. Netstalgia becomes a strategy: it restores trust without redistributing power, softens anger without changing infrastructures and reframes structural problems as matters of vibe, design or community feeling.
"Am I working on change, or am I working on brand repair?" is an important question to ask oneself regularly, it seems to me. It's especially relevant for the tech sector, open source, and computer science.

Today I donated a few bucks to an open source project that I have fallen in love with.

I was a bit disheartened after searching around a bit to see many people discussing how they've never donated to an project, even if they use it daily.

So here's a gentle reminder: We think nothing of spending $20 a month to subscribe to a megacorp, so how about instead you take a minute to donate five bucks to an project you use and enjoy. If everyone did that, the impact would be huge.

                                        🌟 Introducing BSD.cafe 🌟

Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.

BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.

The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.

The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on . Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.

Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.

Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via .

The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.

Join us at mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive community—a safe and relaxing space for everyone.

Our wiki, located at wiki.bsd.cafe, features essential links and articles related to the BSD world. It provides an overview of the tools, services, rules, uptime, and more information about the BSD Cafe Services.

A Matrix server, a Miniflux RSS Reader, the Wiki itself, and the BlendIT Lemmy instance are all part of the BSD Cafe services, with more to come.

Gut so.

No. The framing here is all about how Microsoft is helping Fedora. Microsoft ARE NOT helping Fedora, Microsoft are helping Microsoft.

Call me when they've shoved a hundred million dollars into Fedora where the Fedora community spends it on Fedora community priorities.

This kind of community washing is rife in USA FOSS. This "involvement" is just normal "buying services". They don't need a bloody social media celebration for the equivalent of buying themselves donuts.

A subtoot: corporations, and corporate(-like) behavior, are political. Anyone claiming that corporate-like work is apolitical--work that includes business-friendly software development whether it occurs within the walls of a corporate entity or not--is either naive or deliberately obfuscating reality.

"Politics" isn't only about institutions. It's about organizing large numbers of people to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Corporations organize large numbers of people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they weren't paid and/or didn't need the money to live. 10,000 people wouldn't spontaneously get together and spend the best hours of their days for months building a commercial jet airliner if there weren't corporate structures in place and a society that keeps them close enough to deprivation that they will do this in exchange for money.
