I've been thinking a lot about how we should talk about generative AI recently and here's something I realized; focusing on the ethics of generative AI (or lack thereof) is a waste if you're not also mentioning the practical issues, ESPECIALLY the fact that legally speaking LLM code inherently makes all software licenses unenforceable because only humans can own copyright. If you're wondering why that's important, I've seen enough people have absurd breakdowns over people daring to make package scripts for, say, the AUR to realize that a lot of talented programmers are also extreme control freaks. So it might be worthwhile to mention that LLM generated output is uncopyrightable.

The calculations are very much back of the envelope, first cut, but quite feasible.

Serves 15-20 concurrent users. 40 households of 4 people each (taking into account actual AI model distributed use metrics and contention ratios)

40 households, subscribing at $30/month over 2 years + power (solar). Train with your own datasets.
Entire set up takes half a rack.

I am reading more about Free / open source alternatives to Google's Play Integrity tooling, sometimes called "attestation".

It is the ability for an app developer to set guidelines, which dictate whether an app can run on a user's computer or not.

The more I read, the more important I feel it is for users to be in control.

A user must be able to choose whether or not to follow an attestation guideline or not.

Simply making attestation open source, without giving user's choice and control over what they can run on their computer, is insufficient.

"Am I working on change, or am I working on brand repair?" is an important question to ask oneself regularly, it seems to me. It's especially relevant for the tech sector, open source, and computer science.

Adding the new feature to for clusters during Easter is basically: hiding eggs → finding eggs → realizing some eggs are actually critical alerts

For real, many people asked me for their smaller and mid-sized environments, how to handle remote syslog of their nodes. I had some ideas (some of you may have already found my Rust interpretation of this) but I think having this included in as a centralized management interface makes more sense.

So, PegaProx comes with an own syslog server (ipv4/ipv6, udp/tcp, encrypted/unencrypted support) and is wired to the interface within the resources tab. Providing a quick overview of all your logs and filter options. The next thing is wiring it to the notification system of PegaProx, allowing automated alerting. Might be nice to quickly identify when the quorum got lost - all built-in into PegaProx!

Heavy drama in the open-source world of...

                                              ...Office Document Software.

Nextcloud, originally a fork of ownCloud, has launched Euro-Office, a fork of OnlyOffice (pissing off OnlyOffice). Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.

                                              (I think I've got all that right 😅 Correct me if I haven't! 😂)

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.

Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.

This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

Read and get your fill of the drama here: theregister.com/2026/04/02/eur

For work, there are a few programs that only exist for Windows - for that I run QEMU/KVM and run Windows in a virtual machine.

This field is almost completely inconsequential for surveillance because the signal reported in most cases will be “yes, this user is 18+”. One interesting thought I’ve had is actually that if we strip this signal to websites/apps and do not report an age range at all, but the vast majority of users DO, that actually gives us a more unique and trackable browser fingerprint. Privacy-wise, it’d be wise to “blend in” and always report the most common value. Tor browser thinks this way to make users less fingerprintable. Also, most users have something much more trackable and sensitive on their computer stored in a way that is usually unencrypted: their browser cookies."

What he built - Europe’s second decentralised LinkedIn alternative on ActivityPub - was gloriously vibecoded but effective. It showed, with hard data and testimonials, that the demand for a sovereignty-respecting professional platform is real.

I had been working in parallel: detailed research on technical choices, product mechanics, business-model viability under distributed/FOSS conditions, and how to test everything in practice for such a product. Nothing yolo — but nothing yet proven in production either. Jonathan precluded me by just yolo'ing the Nolto MVP. Thanks for that.

A lot of people want to use FreeBSD on their laptops and desktops, and that really shows.

If there’s interest and more requests, we can definitely expand this in the future with additional desktop environments and options.

The latter runs LMDE EXTREMELY well and straight out of the tin.

The latter though will still likely require age verification. I won't mention ReactOS as it is still only in Alpha and in my experience is a LONG way from being a daily driver for anything, let alone a Windows replacement, however WINE these days is excellent at running many Windows programmes.

A handful of hired bots — worthless, faceless algorithms controlled by corporations — can destroy any large account simply because:

They're not controlled by billionaires. They can't be shut down by corporate pressure.

I've already been blocked 2 times on Twitter, 2 times on X, twice on Facebook, once on a Mastodon server, and 3 times on Instagram.
It all starts when I, as a Ukrainian, post about things that concern me — for example, about forced mobilization of men in Ukraine — and suddenly bots hired by the authorities flood in with mass complaints against my account. Because it's an inconvenient truth that doesn't allow them to steal more money 😅
I was also blocked during COVID when I provided evidence that humanity was being deceived. Facebook and Instagram were the first to block my accounts. Why? Because Bill Gates and others wanted to make their billions, and many people like me were silenced — everyone who asked uncomfortable questions.
That's why I, as a software developer, support everything decentralized. We create our own solutions and improve existing major projects. One of our recent initiatives is to completely rewrite the Yacy search engine for our needs. This is a decentralized network that gives freedom to users. Nobody will monitor what you search for.

We are also creating open source software stewards to support security with a light-touch regime and no administrative fines.
