Richard T. Andrias was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department. He was elected to the State Supreme Court (New York County) in 1987 and re-elected in 2001.^[1] Governor George Pataki appointed Andrias to the Appellate Division in June of 1996.^[2] Andrias retired in 2018.^[3]

Education

Judge Andrias was born in 1943. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1965 with a degree in economics. He served in the Army from 1965 to 1967 and served active duty in Vietnam. He received his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1970. He also attended the Graduate Law School of the London School of Economics and Political Science, but received no degree.^[2][4]

Career

Judge Andrias began his legal career in 1970 as an attorney with the firm Gilbert, Segall & Young. In 1971, he began working as an attorney for the Criminal Division of Legal Aid. In 1975, he joined the firm Davis & Davis. He then worked with the law firm Gordon & Schechtman from 1981 to 1983. After this, he was appointed to the New York City Criminal Court. He became the Supervising Judge of the New York County Criminal Court in 1985. He held this position until his appointment to the State Supreme Court in 1987.^[2][4]
