Some figures in our collections are used more frequently than others. This time, I chose models from the less frequently used category: my Vikings and Normans. Out of curiosity, I checked and realized that the last time these figures were on the table was over two years ago! This fact motivated me to finally get them out of the cupboard and give them some fresh air. The second reason for showcasing them was that Michael had finished painting his three drakkars. They were ready for their debut on the table, initially as scenery but soon to be used as full-fledged models in the game. However, we'll have to wait a bit longer for that. Returning to the game, we combined our collections and played a game using the Hail Caesar rules.

2. The Game.

In our game, the main objective was to capture the tower where the monk with the holy book was located. The player who possesses the book at the end of the game wins. David and I defended the tower while Tim and Michael commanded the hostile Normans—Tim led the cavalry, and Michael led the infantry. On the opposing side, the Vikings landed from the sea to support them, led by Mike.

The enemy Normans began by changing their formation. Initially, both cavalry units were positioned opposite each other, but later, Tim altered his formation, relying on an early version of the Schlieffen Plan. He must have forgotten that the one from World War I had been somewhat of a failure. Nevertheless, he attempted to move his forces, but his orders were repeatedly ignored by his subordinates. Eventually, he managed to reach the hill occupied by David, but by that time, it was too late; the outcome of the battle had already been determined elsewhere.

The most intense battle occurred between my cavalry and Michael's infantry. After his initial, unexpectedly effective barrage, I launched my charge. My knights nearly annihilated Michael's infantry. Following this attack, Tim commanded a retreat. The battle concluded.

As you read this report, you might be curious about what happened to the Vikings. They chose to disregard Mike's orders once again. Aside from his archers, who executed a fairly successful flanking maneuver against my troops, the main forces decided to remain with their ships. They felt that their newly built ships were not worth the risk of being lost over a book.

The battle concluded with a victory for the defenders, primarily due to Tim and Mike's failed orders. Nonetheless, the game was quite enjoyable, particularly because we had the opportunity to take the figures out of their boxes. This was especially satisfying since some of the figures had never participated in the game before. Below is a picture of the losses suffered by both sides: our losses are on the left, while the enemy's losses are on the right.

Something absolutely new to me. 3D printed figures. I started discussing 3D figures with a UK retailer of the Georgios Galazoulas sculptures. Then Chris emailed me, that he have some of his figures, which he doesn't want to use and I can have them. Thanks to Jack, figures were quickly delivered into my hands and then lost in the depths of my drawer of unpainted figures. Then a new product appeared for a completely different project. However, it is also 3D printed. I remembered the Normans, took them out of the drawer and painted them. I decided to do a commander and 2 units of cavalry. I had only 11 figures, and I needed 3 more. During the Carronade I bought a set of Crusaiders from Perry Miniatures. In the drawer, I also found the casualty markers from Gripping Beast. I decided to paint them as well. The last thing was the Shield Wall markers. I made them from the bits, which were left from my earliest Norman cavalry from Conquest Games. All bases are from Warbases (apart from Shield Wall markers, they are 2p coins).

Coś całkowicie nowego dla mnie. Figurki wydrukowane w technice 3D. Jakiś czas temu rozmawiałem z brytyjskim dystrybutorem figurek od Georgiosa Galazoulasa. Wtedy Chris wysłał mi maila, że ma niepotrzebne mu figurki i jeśli chcę, mogę je mieć. Dzięki Jack'owi szybko dotarły w moje ręce i wtedy przepadły w czeluściach mojej szuflady z niepomalowanymi figurkami. Wtedy dowiedziałem się o całkowicie nowym produkcie, który wzmocnił by mój inny projekt. Przypomniałem sobie o Normanach, znalazłem je w szufladzie i pomalowałem. Zdecydowałem się na dowódcę i 2 oddziały. Miałem jedynie 11 figurek i potrzebowałem 3 dodatkowych. Podczas Carronade dokupiłem sobie krzyżowców od Perry Miniatures. W szufladzie natknąłem się również na znaczniki strat od Gripping Beast. Też je pomalowałem. Ostatnią rzeczą są nowe znaczniki do Ściany tarcz. Te powstały z niewykorzystanych części z wcześniejszej partii figurek od Conquest Games. Wszystkie podstawki są od Warbases (oprócz znaczników Ściany z tarcz, te są na monetach 2 pensowych).

Now my opinion about the 3D printed figures. Firstly, the poses and sculpture. That is amazing, which can be sometimes reached by plastic figures, but is unreachable for metal ones. I very much admired the works of Georgios. However, here all goods are finished and we moving for the bad sides. The biggest issue is the material. It is resin and has all the bad things of that material. I lost two horses because they simply dropped on the floor (I have a very soft carpet, to prevent something like that to happen, sadly not this time). Luckily I had spare horses from Conquest Games. Any fancy poses are especially at risk. Looking at the durability of the material, I have the impression that they are not necessarily suitable for wargaming... We'll see when I take them to the club...

Teraz czas na moją opinię o wydrukach 3D. Wpierw, pozy i rzeźba. Ta jest wspaniała, co czasem może być osiągnięte przez produkty plastikowe ale jest nieosiągalna dla wyrobów z metalu. Bardzo podziwiam pracę Georgiosa. Jednakże, tu kończą się ich dobre strony, czas na te złe. Największym fatum jest tu materiał. Jest to żywica i ma wszystkie jej najgorsze cechy. Straciłem dwa konie, tylko z tego powodu, że upadły na podłogę (mam bardzo miękką wykładzinę, by czemuś takiemu zapobiegać, niestety nie w tym przypadku). Na szczęście miałem zapasowe konie z Conquest Games. Szczególnie zagrożone są wszelkie fantazyjne pozy. Patrząc na wytrzymałość materiału, mam wrażenie, że niekoniecznie nadają się one do wargamingu... Zobaczymy, jak je zabiorę do klubu...

Our next game was Lion Rampant with seven players (it should be 9, but some cannot make it that evening). All had 24 points armies. On one side were Tim (Vikings), Donald (Scots), Mike (Normans) and Alasdair (Welsh). On the other were Campbell, Peter and I (all Normans). We were short 24 points, so we quickly made up missing forces from freshly painted Campbell's figures, creating equal forces. We have the battle over the river with 4 crossings. The side in possession of more of them (to claim the crossing, the side has to control both ends of them) would win the game.

Naszą następną grą był Lion Rampant z siedmioma graczami (powinno być ich 9, ale nie wszyscy dali radę być obecnymi tego wieczora). Wszyscy mieli armie o sile 24 punktów. Po jednej stronie był Tim (Wikingowie), Donald (Szkoci), Mike (Normanowie) i Alasdair (Walijczycy) Po drugiej stronie był Campbell, Peter i ja (wszyscy Normanowie). Mieliśmy siły słabsze o 24 punkty, ale szybko wyrównaliśmy to świeżo pomalowanymi figurkami Campbella. Mieliśmy bitwę nad rzeką z 4 przeprawami. Strona, która na koniec gry będzie w posiadaniu większej ich ilości (by być w posiadaniu, trzeba było kontrolować oba jej końce) wygra ją.

1. The game. Gra.

I took command of our right flank. In front of me was the army of Welsh led by Alasdair, on my left was Campbell and finally diagonally was Mike. I agreed with Campbell, that I will try to crush Alasdair and then attack from the flank Mike, In that way, we will get two crossings. It started very well for me as my missile troops took positions over the river and successfully kept Welsh and Mike's Normans away. Finally, I moved Norman's heavy infantry forward, to push on Alasdair's forces. That worked very well and soon he had to withdraw to the gap between two forests. However, that finished very bad for my infantry as the number of casualties forced them to break. Anyway, it was their first time at the table, so they met their destination anyway, but this time they did their job. Then Alasdair charged with his troops but again was stopped by my crossbows and bows. Then I finally made a way for my heavy cavalry to charge. The first attack was stopped by the Scots, but the second was devastating. I had the crossing and on Mike's flank. The job is done!

Dowodziłem naszą prawą flanką. Naprzeciw siebie miałem Walijczyków Alasdaira, po mojej lewej Campbella a po przekątnej Mike'a. Uzgodniłem z Campbellem, że postaram się złamać Alasdaira i w ten sposób zaatakuję Mike'a z jego flanki. Dało by nam to dwie przeprawy. Zacząłem bardzo dobrze, ponieważ wszystkie strzelające oddziały znalazły się nad rzeką i z sukcesem trzymali Walijczyków i Normanów Mike'a na dystans. W końcu ruszyłem się normańską ciężką piechotą do przodu i natarłem na oddziały Alasdaira. To zadziałało, ponieważ zmusiło go do cofnięcia się pomiędzy dwa laski. Jednak, skończyło się to bardzo źle dla piechoty, ponieważ w końcu została złamana ze względu na poniesione straty. Był to ich pierwszy raz na stole, więc takie było ich przeznaczenie, jednak tym razem wykonali kawał dobrej roboty. Wtedy Alasdair ruszył ze swoim atakiem, ale ponownie został zatrzymany przez moje łuki i kusze. Wtedy do boju ruszyła moja ciężka kawaleria. Pierwszy atak został zatrzymany, jednak drugi był już nie do zatrzymania. Byłem w posiadaniu przeprawy i byłem na flance Mike'a. Robota wykonana!

Campbell had a much more complex task, as some of his forces he has to send to Peter to support him in the fight against Donald and Tim (but more about it later). He made a long fight about the next crossing against Mike. Campbell get support from my crossbows, who tried to kill Mike's warlord, but I failed. Campbell made attacks one after another, and his warlord finally paid for that with his life. Finally, mostly thanks to my success against the Welsh he took the next crossing. We had 2 now!

Campbell miał dużo trudniejsze zadanie, ponieważ musiał wysłać część swoich oddziałów by wesprzeć Petera w jego walce przeciw Donaldowi i Timowi (o tym jednak później). Długo walczył o kolejną przeprawę przeciw Mike'owi. Moi kusznicy wsparli Campbella, próbując zabić wodza Mike'a, ale nieskutecznie. Campbell ponawiał swoje ataki i w końcu jego wódz przypłacił to życiem. W końcu, dzięki sukcesom odniesionym przeze mnie przeciw Walijczykom, udało mu się zająć drugą przeprawę. Teraz mieliśmy ich dwie!

On our left flank, Pater supported by Campbell defended against Donald and Tim. Tim created a very powerful list, which I had the opportunity to meet during the last game. This time Peter and Campbell had to make a stand against it. It was very hard, however, they made it. Tim crossed over the river and tried to crush Peter's flank. Unsuccessfully. In the meantime, Donald attempted to cross the river but was stopped. Till the end of the game, Peter holds his position. That gave us victory. We've had two crossings, one was unresolved and one was taken by Tim. 2:1 and our victory!

Na naszej lewej flance Peter, wsparty przez Campbella bronił się przeciw Donaldowi i Timowi. Tim stworzył bardzo silną listę, przeciw której miałem okazję walczyć podczas ostatniej gry. Tym razem to Peter i Campbell mieli stanąć przeciw niej. Było trudno, ale im się udało. Tim przekroczył rzekę i próbował skruszyć flankę Petera. Nieudanie jednak. W międzyczasie Donald próbował przekroczyć rzekę, ale został zatrzymany. Do końca gry Peter utrzymał swoje pozycje. To dało nam zwycięstwo. Byliśmy w posiadaniu dwóch przepraw, jedna z nich była nierozstrzygnięta a jedną zajął Tim. 2:1 i nasze zwycięstwo!
