A judge at the Southern Finland District Court decided that a 54-year old nurse and his 42-year old wife – also a nurse – should be remanded into custody on suspicion of a number of offences, including murder and embezzlement.

The man is suspected of theft as well as killing an 84-year old woman who was in his care at a care services facility in Salo, southwest Finland. His wife, a practical nurse, is suspected of ten counts of felony embezzlement.

According to the result of a preliminary investigation by police the man is believed to have poisoned an 84-year old woman who was in care at the home. The couple allegedly killed the woman in a bid to get their hands on her property. The duo is also thought to have stolen from other seniors at the facility.

The man was remanded into custody Thursday morning, while the woman was sent to pre-trial detention later in the afternoon.

On Thursday morning the Turku-based paper Turun Sanomat reported that the murder almost went undetected, with suspicions only being raised when it was noticed just how much of the victim’s estate was due to be left to her care givers. Police say they are now examining cases of other clients at the care home.
